Default Purchasing a bowling ball

Dear friends,

Things you need you know when you are purchasing a bowling ball. ( Not in Order )

1) What level are you at?

If you are at the beginner level, i would recommand that you get a polyester ball and start bowling with a grip custom to your fitting. If you are starting on hooking and plan to buy a reactive ball, please get an entry level ball as it is inexpensive and you may change weight in the later part of your game. Doesnt mean that you buy an expensive ball, the ball will work for you.

2) What kind of conditions are you going to bowl on?

You need to know what are the lane conditions you are going to bowl and make the selection of the ball. (look under Coverstock)

3) Your ball speed.

Ball speed matters with your ball selection. Why is that so? If you have slow ball speed, your ball will hook more then bowlers with faster ball speed. If you were to purchase a matte surface ball, your ball may roll too early and lose energy when it reaches the pin, the ball will also hook too much. We only have limited space for us to shift!!!!

4) Your Rev rate.

Rev is also another point that you should consider. If you have a low rev rate, it would be recommanded that you get a Low RG ball because low rev cause the ball to skid longer down the lane. If your rev is high, you should try to get a High RG ball as so the ball will not over work for you.

5) What type of coverstock you need?

Understanding coverstock is important. You need to match up the coverstock to the lanes that you are bowling. Basically there are a 4 coverstock in the market;

a) Urethane b) Pearl Reactive c) Soild Reactive d) Partical

6) Which type of core design? High RG or Low RG

I hope this helps

4. how do you determine whether your rev is low or high? how to see? and rg usually comes in numbers, like 2.5 or something like dat... so what number is considered low rg, and what is high rg?

5. what's the diff between a urethane, polyester and plastic ball? and what's the diff between pearlized, solid, particle and sanded?

thanks.

Question

How to match coverstock to the lanes? What type of lanes use which type of coverstock.
E.g.
1) lanes in Mt Faber and lanes in Marina Square what type of coverstock is suitable?
2) How do we know what type of lanes match what type of coverstock ?

Default Re: Purchasing a bowling ball

RG(radius of gyration)...An account of the location of the mass inside a bowling ball. Rg tells us whether the ball has the mass toward the center of the ball (low rg), toward the cover of the ball (high rg) or somewhere in between (medium rg).

1. Low rg balls rev up quickly.

2. Medium rg balls rev up slightly later.

3.High rg balls lope down the lane saving the energy until later.

usually the number is from 2.4-2.6 (as a rough gauge)

Rev rate....The number of times in which the weight block makes one full rotation around the axis line, as it rolls from the foul line to the head pin.
usually measure by use of computers

coverstock

polyester...A coverstock comprised of plastic material. Generally displays a mild ball reaction, and limited durability.

urethane...A coverstock comprised of material from the polymer family which creates a hard, durable surface on the ball.

reactive...A coverstock comprised of similar materials used in urethane formulations, however blended with different additives. This coverstock adheres to lane surface, creating the most backend reaction, the least deflection and the most hitting power of any coverstock manufactured today.

particle...Relates to coverstocks, particle technology consists of small units of various materials added to the shell. Particle coverstocks provide increased traction in the oil.

pearl...a type of coverstock which originates from the reactive polymers that is designed to mae the ball go long on the lanes

as for what sort of lanes and matching up wat sort of balls, its a combination of factors before deciding what sort of ball to use...
style of play,
speed,
lane conditions
its not just about matching up coverstock with lanes

in the past its just simply..

dry lanes...polyester/urethane/pearl

medium...reactive

heavy...particle

but with techonology so advance, its difficult to say what is for wat even though the ball manufacturer will state wat sort of condition a particular ball is made s uitable for ,but we can play with the finishing of the coverstock to get the desired reaction we get although its not recommended to do so as we will be wearing out the coverstock tru constant changing of surface

Attention to all:

Storm Singapore will be holding a demonstration on the different types of coverstock and explain on the following issues as well during the Monday Bowling Clinic 07 April 2008.

1) REV RATE
2) BALL SPEED
3) RG
4) COVERSTOCK

And also we will be measuring the PAP (Positive Axis Point) of the bowlers who attend the clinic on that day.
We hope to see you there

Thank You

How do we "read" the rev specification to determine what type of rev is suitable for your bowling style ?
