PUB to take errant contractor to task over improper rubbish disposal SINGAPORE : The PUB said it's looking into the complaint that cleaners are dumping rubbish back into the other side of the Bukit Panjang canal.
A viewer had called Channel NewsAsia's hotline on August 29 to alert the media on this shocking practice.
According to PUB, this wasn't the correct way to clear rubbish in a canal.
PUB said the proper method of doing it is to send a small scavenger boat out at high tide to trawl for rubbish.
The rubbish collected is then transported onto the shore, before being sent to the rubbish incinerators.
PUB said any deviation from such proper procedure is a professional breach of contract, and it will take the contractors involved to task.
"We view the situation very seriously, and we're looking at appropriate actions that we can take against the contractor," said Yap Kheng Guan, director of 3P Network Department at PUB.
"This is an isolated case and we feel very bad that this has happened. We cannot tolerate this from happening again. We are looking at more training and we'll engage more supervision to this project to prevent such things from happening again," said Freddy Toh, cleaning contractor for the western catchment. - CNA /ls |
