Default The pre shot routine

let mi ask u guys...

can anybody tell me wat is pre shot routine?
how does it help in your bowling?

answers pls.....

and i will not input any info until i get at least 5 replies cos i know there are more than 5 bowlers on the team

there will be no "right" or "wrong" answers

i am sure u guys are able to come out with an explanation

cos this will be part of our training in future

from now on it will be a 2 way traffic for the bowling team as in i want the bowlers to input how they feel, wat is their opinions etc etc so that you bowlers can really etch it into your mind in the bowling section of your memory dept

Default Re: The pre shot routine

let me start the (bowling) ball rolling (down the lane).....

pre-shot routine, to my understanding, is some form of actions or things you do everytime, without fail, before you prepare the approach. examples like drying your hands with the dryer lah.... blowing the thumb hole and your thumb lah (like remy ong), do a backswing with your ball once lah, puffing the thumbhole with your puffball lah, a deep exhale lah... so on and so forth.

how does it help? well, it will help you to be consistent in your performance.

coach, you mentioned many times that consistency is a key factor to good bowling. so, developing good habits like a pre-shot routine will surely help your game to be consistent as well. on top of that, pre-shot routines will also put a bowler into a comfortable state of mind and body, and all ready to throw that perfect shot, over and over again.

watch remy ong's pre-shot routine here:

my 5-cents worth.

Hmm, my pre shot routine, works for me alot.. dry hands with puff ball, lock elbow in... feel the ball. if i dont feel good abt the shot.. i will put ball down...drink water.. den come back.. If i still don feel good, i will add extra two steps to my approach. Yea... n i muz block out other ppl when i step on the approach.. ezier for me to aim... duno la.. works for me so thats how i do... sometimes important games i will talk to myself one... My talking will stop the moment i step onto the approach, and start again once the pinsetter come down.. yea... built into me already.. cant change.. but if bowl with frens for fun, sometimes i will stuggle to not do that, cuz they chat while i on the approach ... yea but that would mean i wun get the best of scores la.. Training pre shot routine for me is different.... i would do 4step without ball. until i get the feel, den with ball, den i will be playing with different lines, to try to see which line to play. i will shift 10 boards on foot, 5 board with target for like 2 times..until it becomes straight ball.. yea thats wad i do. dont reli bother if the test shots hit the pocket.. its juz how my ball reacts. den plus minus a few boards to get my starting line, and then shift once again after every 2shots

For my pre shot routine, will be wipe off the dirt of my shoe and proceed to pick up my ball and look left and right to see any people near me that is bowling, because i can get distracted even afew lanes away from me, then at the standing point i will just take one deep breath or some time twice if i still don't feel calm, and mostly i will think of the word calm in my mind, and if i get a spilt or some difficult spare i would just add in a quick prayer and go for the shot.

more replies.........
from the 3 replies i see similarities both in the good and bad ways

lets see what the rest hafta say 1st......

just to add on a little

bear into consideration the following phrase

"good bowling involves repetition"
a good player can duplicate the same series of motions time after time to produce consistent shot making

As for me,

nothing much in actions thou, wipe the ball, count the boards, stand in position,
in my mind keep telling myself, thumb point target and follow thru. Then I will start my 1st step.

better get back on the original topic lah ....
I guess the pre-shot routine is anything that you do which puts you in the comfort zone to be relax enough to begin the actual bowling action in order to repeat shots. Once u begin to bowl, cannot think too much liao, otherwise ur rhythm will go haywire! Too bad for me .. bo comfort zone

well, let me try..

pre-shot routine is a habit develped by the bowler over time before a shot is release (release the ball in simple term.. hee.. me beginner mah..)

this routine will includes your right timing - not too fast/slow, back swing, your balance, etc.

Default Re: The pre shot routine

the pre shot routine.....

its a group of preparatory activities that puts a bowler in the best stead to make a good shot

a bowler would wanna be physically and mentally set before the initial set was taken

999 out of 1000 bowlers have their own unique routine.
all good ones, however, contains actions that have an important purpose,
they share another common ingredient :CONSISTENCY

what was decided to incorporate into the routine,
make sure nothing more or less is added everytime
and the sequence is not changed

if a bowler starts doing diff things every time, the bowler will hafta readjust before every shot
thus consistency will not be achieved

u wanna have the same rhythmn, which helps u feel comfortable and confident,
after a while the routine will become "autopilot",thus allowing the bowler to concentrate on the task at hand, which is to send the ball to the place u want to

the most important thing in developing your pre shot routine is not to copy what majority of the pros do,instead do what is natural to you

reason;cos everybody is built differently and has different mindset not to mention you wont not be able to understand why they are doing it

at the end of the day...the key of the preshot routine is to enable u to slip into that comfort zone to achieve the highest rate of consistency possible

your routine should become a second nature, just like shifting gears while driving, its oemthing u are able to do withtout consciously thinking about it
