HK man says ex-boss at pet shop abused him for being tongue-tied, staring at female customers

HE was hired as a pet shop assistant, but became a punching bag for his boss instead.

Mr Shek Ka-Fai, a former assistant at a bird shop, told the Hong Kong District Court yesterday that he endured four years of daily abuse from his boss Chan Pui-man. She even pinched his tongue with pliers for being 'tongue-tied'.

The attack reportedly left a 1.5cm permanent cut in the middle of his tongue.

Mr Shek, 27, alleged that he suffered at least one attack every day since starting work at the Wan Chai pet shop in April 1999, reported the South China Morning Post.

The abuse started with harmless blows, but two months later, Mr Shek said Chan began punching and slapping him.

She later beat him with whatever tools she could find, the court heard.

She even hit him in front of customers, it was reported.

Chan, 31, is accused of using more than a dozen weapons - mop handles, screwdrivers, a hammer, wooden chairs, pliers, a mug and iron and wooden rods - to attack Mr Shek.

She faces 14 charges of abuse.

Mr Shek was left with dark purple bruises and marked swelling all over his body and face, the court heard.

Once, Chan allegedly beat Mr Shek for 15 minutes with an iron bar, a hammer and a wooden pole. She blamed him for the death of two birds, the prosecutor said.

Chan also reportedly hit Mr Shek in the groin and punched him in the face.

'I was assaulted more than once every day and it became worse,' Mr Shek said.

He was allegedly beaten for not being able to sell goods off the shelves, staring at female customers, when birds were found dead or stolen or cages left dirty, he said.

Mr Shek added: 'She wanted to correct me and teach me to do things right. She said, 'I didn't want to hit you, but when I saw that you did something wrong, my anger blinded me.' '

Chan told him the assaults were giving her nightmares, 'so she told me to improve so she wouldn't keep hitting me'.

The abuse reportedly took place from 2001 to 2004. Mr Shek said he never told anyone as Chan claimed to have friends in a triad gang and threatened his family.

He was also embarrassed.

Mr Shek got the job through a relative and started working for a monthly pay of HK$8,000 ($1,600) with one day off every fortnight.

But he was eventually forced to work a 12-hour shift with no fixed holidays for an occasional monthly salary of HK$3,000.

According to Apple Daily, as the height of his abuse took place during the Sars period, Mr Shek went around with a mask and his facial injuries went undetected by his family for months.

Mr Shek's sister, who was called as a witness, said that Mr Shek left for work at 4am and returned very late at night.

It was only when Mr Shek's father noticed bruises on his arm that he finally confessed to being abused.

Chan has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
