Default NUS launches virtual storybook with mixed reality technology

SINGAPORE: Postgraduates from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have pioneered the creation of a virtual storybook using state-of-the-art technology.

This virtual storybook, called wIzQubes, uses mixed reality technology to create a fresh storytelling experience for children.

Mixed reality is the infusion of both the virtual and physical platforms.

The product is a brainchild of MXR Corporation, an interactive digital media company which is a spin-off from the National University of Singapore.

wIzQubes uses a web camera, two building blocks and a software – all of which are included in the package – to blur the line of 3D and reality.

The software installation configures one's PC to recognise the sensory messages of the camera.

These messages produce virtual images that rest on the building blocks, which are then captured on the screen.

The futuristic storybook focuses on interactivity, requiring the reader to choose different objects on the cube to continue different scenes of stories.

Dr Steven Zhou, CEO & Director, MXR Corporation, said: "It uses mixed reality technology. Basically, the webcam is just like the human eye, while the CPU is just like the human brain.

"The webcam recognises patterns on the cubes and tells the CPU what to respond, according to the user's interaction."

All this would not be possible without the help of a S$40,000 grant by NUS Enterprise.

The fund tided MXR Corporation through three years of its development.

Brian Koh, Associate Director, NUS Enterprise, said: "This is a spin-off from NUS that we really believe in. We've seen it through a couple of years and we believe that there's a lot of potential in this field of mixed reality."

wIzQubes is priced at S$139.95 and is available at major bookstores in Singapore.
