SINGAPORE : The NUS High School of Mathematics and Science plans to provide more opportunities for its students to learn through hands-on experience.

Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam revealed this at the School's official opening ceremony on Monday evening.

Mr Tharman said experiential learning, found in other top schools for maths and science abroad, was essential in nurturing inventive minds.

Such learning includes technical workshops, classroom laboratories and specialised labs for research and project work.

So the Ministry of Education will work on the details with the School and NUS.

It has been two and a half years since the School was set up and it now has about 680 students, aged 13 to 17.

The School, which was conceptualised five years ago by then Education Minister Teo Chee Hean, aims to nurture well-rounded maths and science geniuses, through a six-year programme which involves intensive research projects and independent learning.

Mr Tharman said, "I am glad to note that NUS, in collaboration with MOE, has accredited the NUS High School's curriculum. We are confident that SMU and NTU, as well as renowned universities overseas, will similarly accept the NUS High School Diploma as a mark of high quality."

The School has already made much headway since it was founded. Last year, students had their research paper published in top-tier journal Applied Physics B.

Students are also starting to get prestigious scholarships and coveted attachments through the Education Ministry. - CNA/ms
