Re: numbering of cards ... There is a lot of history and background to that simple question, which I have been somewhat looking into. The short answer is that the numbering is different because by the tradition which Crowley followed, the major arcana were given astrological significance. And the tradition disputed that the attribution of Strength and Justice were 8 and 11 respectively.
I personally do not believe that this change in attribution changes our understanding of the cards. It is the view of Crowley and it seems to me that only the placing of the two cards have changed.
If you're really interested, I'd suggest you get the book "Understanding Aleister Crowley's Toth Tarot" by Lon Milo DuQuette. He explains the significance of the swap between the two cards in Chapter 13. DuQuette covers the history as well as the paradigm of the artist and creator of the Toth Tarot. I would caution that it is not a book suited for beginners though, so it helps to have some experience with the Toth Tarot or a wide knowledge of the Tarot if you want tog et the most of this book.
