SINGAPORE: A new scholarship and programme have been launched to attract young Singaporeans to work in the environment and water industries within the public sector.
The National Environment and Water (NEW) Scholarship is aimed at building up the manpower needs for these growth areas in Singapore.
The scholarship comes under the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
Up to 20 undergraduate scholarships will be offered every year, beginning 2009.
Scholars can opt for undergraduate degree programmes in areas like Biology, Environmental Science or Engineering either in Singapore or abroad.
The scholarship will cover factors like tuition fees and monthly maintenance allowance. Scholars will have to serve a bond upon graduation.
Aside from the scholarship, the government is also encouraging students to take up internships at various water agencies like the PUB and the National Environment Agency (NEA).
The internships, known as the NEW Programme, will give students an opportunity to understand the water and environment sectors better.
Promising students may also be offered the scholarship.
According to Environment and Water Resources Minister, Yaacob Ibrahim, "our people not only play a pivotal role in helping Singapore gear towards environmental sustainability, their experience and knowledge can also be shared with the world." - CNA/ir
