New Ngee Ann Poly programme targets disadvantaged students SINGAPORE : Rising stars - that's what some students from three local secondary schools can hope to be when a new programme started by Ngee Ann Polytechnic begins in January next year.
Called the Rising Star Programme, some 60 students from Bukit View Secondary, Dunearn Secondary and Tanglin Secondary will be selected for this pilot scheme.
But unlike most immersion programmes, the meritorious will not be selected.
Instead, under-performers from disadvantaged backgrounds will be picked.
Ngee Ann Polytechnic will use some of their best students to mentor and train the secondary school kids with tuition classes in mathematics and science.
Foo See Meng, Deputy Principal of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, said: "We will give talks to the students, as well as (teach them) life skills. We'll bring those students to the polytechnic and expose them to a polytechnic education and environment, such as lectures and our students.
"So at the end of the programme, the student will be able to make an informed choice as to whether polytechnic is the right place for them."
If the pilot scheme is a success, it will be broadened to 10 schools by the end of 2008. - CNA /ls To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. |
