I just went there in March (1st trip to Bangkok) and was hooked to the city! Going again in September 9 - 12.

Stayed in Swissotel Nai Lert Park in my previous visit (staff rate - cheaper). Very good service and the place is awesome! Location is abit out thou. The nearest BTS is Chitlom. Took me around 10-15mins walk from the hotel.

Gonna try out Reflections Hotel for my Sept trip: reflections-thai.com/rooms.html
Seems interesting.. And it's just a 5min walk from Ari BTS.

Shopping wise, I love Platinum Shopping Mall!! It's opposite Amari Watergate Hotel in Pratunam area. It's a wholesale centre, but the place doesn't feel 'cheap' at all. You get the wholesale price when you buy 3 items and above.

Chatuchak Market is another great place to find stuff. And they sell anything under the sun! Gotta Bargain!!

My 2 cents worth.. Enjoy your Bangkok Trip!

Hi pple, I'm back.

Very easy to take taxi to and from airport. Turn right when check out from airport. Cost less than 300 baht per way. Took abt 30-45 mins depending on traffic conditions. Feel free to agree to travel expressway; meaning ter's charges for toll. The cabby will ask u if u want to take expressway. My toll charge from airport to hotel (abt 2pm) is 25 baht and 40 baht from hotel to airport (abt 5plus pm). I'm not sure y e difference, mayb bcos of timing.. but it's still cheap.

Din regret staying @ Samran Place. Basically, the place is mostly occupied by Singaporeans during my stay ter. Room is clean, got bathtub. Check out time is 12 noon. I extended till 6pm and only need to pay 600 baht (abt SGD22) per room. Drinking water is free and can be replenish everyday. I oso like it not too congested wif pple. Breakfast is free but not buffet.

Other things to expect from hotel:
~ small hotel. no swimming pool.
~ non-airconditioned corridor but not stuffy.
~ no free internet. But access is cheap.
~ stained towels.
~ No toothbrush/ toothpaste.

Ter's a massage shop just beside e hotel & the rate is cheap as compared to other massage shops in night market or shopping malls. 1 hr traditional thai massage cost only 200 baht. manicure and pedicure 150 baht each. i went massage everyday. haha.. :love4:

I always book hotel from www.asiarooms.com. so far, i still found their offer cheapest.

Walk to asia hotel only takes 5 mins. Bought cakes ter after 5pm, got 40% discount. Imagine it's only 40-50 baht per piece b4 discount.

Not 4geting to shop @ naraya in asia hotel too. Oh ya, if u wanna watch cabaret show in asia hotel, u may wish to buy ticket from samran place. 700 baht per person & comes wif 1 free drink. If u buy direct from their counter in asia hotel, it's 1000 baht per person.

Places i went:
~ MBK - Walk abt 8 mins from Asia Hotel (Still gd to shop & dine ter. If got time, can watch movie ter too)
~ Siam Square (More youngster stuffs & cheaper than MBK. More own designers' fashion)
~ Discovery centre (Not nice to shop)
~ Bobe Market (Wholesale clothings; cheap but may not sell u 1 piece)
If u r more adventurous, u can bypass traffic jam by taking boat (8 baht per way) But must be careful, bcos they dun inform u which stop or how many stops and u may need to alight from the other side of the boat. the locals were swift in boarding/ alighting the boat but it's a bit of juggle for us foreigners. Of cos wat u gain is a different experience)
~ Pantip Plaza (Like our Sim Lim. Electronics & computer stuffs generally more expensive than S'pore)
~ Pratunam market, Bai yoke market (Wholesale again; may not sell 1 piece)
~ Sum Luan Night Bazaar (Lesser tourists nowsadays but still manage to find some own designer's stuffs like bag)

Din manage to find their Nai Lerk Market. Even the locals dun know. So sad. Anybody knows, pls enlighten me. Heard the place is like a scaled-down Chatuchak.

Oh ya, the craze now in Thailand is Jatukarm. It's an amulet and I oso bought 1 for myself. Beware of fake ones. Those made of powder ones more value and u shd b able to smell from e amulet. If cannot smell anything, it shd b fake one. If got hole along circumfrence of e round jatukarm, shd oso be imitates.

Any decent hotel which is not so expensive(clean toilet and room is a must)
or near to the chatuchak market or cheap shopping....budget hotels are also fine.

And is it best to go on weekend or weekdays?

Roughly around how much do u actually spend there including flight and hotel.
Are those budget airlines like air asia or tiger airways be a better option for flight.

Thanks!
1. Airfare: If you can plan and confirm in advance the deals offered by full service airlines are quite competitive. U may check wz the airlines website or Zuji
2. Hotel accommodation: I recommend the Pathumwan Princess which is right beside MBK (which i think would cater much to your shopping needs) All the air con shopping u can enjoy. On the 5th floor (MBK) there is a food centre which has all kinds of food nice n cheap. And if u like something a little more better you may consider walking over to Discovery Centre's Japanese restaurant - Oishi. Try it and I assure you won't regret it. Yes the hotel is a little pricey but if you think in terms of getting about and the cost of transporting here and there (with the limited time that u have there) I think it is well worth your while. Oh there is also the Siam Square don't forget to go to the Coca Suki Steamboat Restaurant. All these are within walking distance.
If it is too pricey then the next alternative will be the Asia Hotel.
3. The happenings are mainly in the Southern part of the country - Yala, Pattani and Songkhla. In Bangkok you will not find this at all, everything's pretty relax.

Hope this helps if not send me an email.

As for shopping, I would recommend you CenCom Centre. It is a huge shopping centre with individual floors specialising in woman's clothing, electronic, etc.

It cost about 900 baht a night which is less than SG$40 per day.

Don't read too much about the coup, demostrations, bombings, etc. You will hardly noticed them at all.

Be prepared to pay about 300 baht for a taxi from the A'port to town area.

My advise is for you to take TG or SQ as should you decide to extend your holidays here, these 2 airlines are able to do so without you incurring extra costs. As for the budget airlines, if you missed or change your flight or extend your stay, you will have to fork out for a new ticket. As for Finair, Air Iltalia, Quatas, they only have a twice weekly flight.

Do drop me a PM if you are in BKK. Would not mind showing you and your BF around in Bangkok.

Do remember to bargain for everything. :biggrin4:

hi, got a question here! erm.. may i know how much tips do you think is appropriate to give the thais?

Its usually up to you. 10 or 20 baht is sufficient.

FACT : Do not be mistaken when the clasp their hands together and bowed to you when you give them tips. They are showing respect to their KING and not you as the note carries a potrait of their KING. :biggrin4:
