SINGAPORE: Half a million litres of water and 260,000 food-packs – that is the total amount expected to be consumed by performers and participants at this year's National Day Parade (NDP).

About four million snacks and drinks have to be picked up and delivered to feed some 7,000 participants at four different places, including Suntec City Convention Centre.

A special NDP Show Village has also been built from scratch, just for the performers.

Major Tay Soon Teck, Chairman, Logistics and Finance, NDP 2007, said: "We have actually installed portable toilets, portable hand-washing equipment, as well as installation of additional fans.

"We also provide chairs so that they don't have to sit on the wooden platform that we have raised on the ground. Mainly it is to allow them to have the comfort while waiting to go to the seating gallery for the show."

More than 100,000 spectators without tickets are expected to turn up on 9 August and watch the show from around the bay.

As part of crowd control, 30 cameras have been installed for security surveillance.

Colonel Ho Kong Wai, Chairman, NDP 2007 Security & Contingency, said: "There are fixed cameras as well as cameras that can pan, tilt and zoom into areas of concern. We want to ensure Singaporeans that if you come down here, you'll have a very celebratory mood, comforted by the fact that you will feel safe and secure."

To ensure full security, organisers have also put cameras in the central business district.

On the ground, policemen in uniforms will be doing their patrols through the crowds.

There are even security personnel in plain clothes to do random checks on anyone they deem suspicious.

Security aside, the Infocomm Development Authority and MediaCorp are providing subsidised 3G services just for National Day.

3G phone users can upload videos online and make video calls at a fraction of the usual price.
