Default My Schnauzer - Pepper

Hi people,

I just got my dog a few hours ago, naming it Pepper.

Pepper is a Schnauzer born in 15/10/2007.

I have some questions for experience owners..

1) I have decided to leave him alone at my parents room toilet and he keeps whining. Yet i left him one side because i do not want him to be too dependent on me and to be dependent on human presence. Am i wrong to do that? =/ I feel the pain but i cannot possibly sleep with him everyday. Today is the first day of his stay at my place, and i'm doing this.. am i too cruel? =(

2) What should i look out for when i'm taking care of him?

3) How do i toilet train him?

4) When can i start bathing him?

5) He keeps eating his own shit! how?!

I hope to know more schnauzer owners so i can get more information about this breed.

thanks! =)

A picture of him

You can put some old clothes of yours for the dog as their comfort blanket. Puppy will feel secured.

And also, put paper in the area for the puppy to train for toilet train.

Best is to keep the puppy in a small area at the toilet with enough room for the puppy to roam around.

Once, the puppy is trained, slowly increase the area from the toilet to the kitchen, and then finally to the living room, and so on.

Eating shit is because the puppy smell food that is not digested in the shit. Are you feeding the puppy correct?

And also do not feed chicken to the puppy. No chicken at all.

are you keeping him inside a cardboard box?. i would recommend you to get a playpen rather than keeping him in that box. the space seems limited.

His still a puppy, when letting him run around . close supervision is needed. as his still a puppy, he tend to be playful and curious and will nibble on anything they see and may even swallow it.

Its normal for them to wine but there several ways you could calm them down, leave a ticking clock beside it, a warm bottle at the place he slp, on the radio . many ways.

Check our pet forum or the internet to know more.

hope this information helps.

Good luck and, nice puppy you have

Default Re: My Schnauzer - Pepper

1) You should not be leaving him in a toilet, as he is still young, and it natural of him to be frighten in a new home and also, leaving him in the toilet will not help, he needs fresh air and sun light..

You should give him more attention in the day and get a playpan, and keep him inside as and when you are not around. When at night before you sleep, put him back there then go back to your room, the puppy will whine for attention, but its ok.. check with him if you feel that something is wrong, if not, let him whine, they will stop when they know they are not getting anything.

Something you need to take note of, please keep any medication or anything which is toxic out of reach, cos they might just chew it up.

2) Make sure you check his stool, not too hard and not too soft.. cos by looking at his stool, you will know whether is there anything wrong with him. Has he been vaccinated? cos if he hasn't, please bring him to a good vet and have it done soonest.

Never hit your puppy near his butt, cos his kidney is there, hence might damage it when you hit it too hard. Please be patience with him, as he is still a baby.

3) Place newspaper at the same area that you want him to pee. Whenever he pee at the wrong area, scold him and pretend that you are very angry, then correct him after that.

Try to place only 1 area for toilet, don't keep changing the location, it's confusing for them if you keep changing.

4) I think the pet shop bathe him before you collected right? if yes, then you can bathe him in a week's time, but try not avoid water getting into his ear, cos wil caused infection in his ear.

You can try bathing him starting from his butt first, slowly move to the front and beware of the shampoo getting into his eyes.

After bath, you can dry him with a hair-dryer then use the ear lotion to clean the inside of his ears and wipe away the tear stain..

5) I am not sure why for this.. but you should not be feeding him dry dog food which is too huge in size. It should be small and soak with a little bit of water to soften it. Try to get him some booster, as he is still very young.

Hope all this help, if not PM me..

Default Re: My Schnauzer - Pepper

1) I have decided to leave him alone at my parents room toilet and he keeps whining. Yet i left him one side because i do not want him to be too dependent on me and to be dependent on human presence. Am i wrong to do that? =/ I feel the pain but i cannot possibly sleep with him everyday. Today is the first day of his stay at my place, and i'm doing this.. am i too cruel? =(

instead of keeping him out of sight, buy a metal fence whereby u can fence him up at a corner of the living room so that he can see everyone. Thus, he won't feel too lonely when there's humans around him. instead of letting him sleep on your bed, let him sleep in the fence for mayb a week. slowly remove the fence but not let him run around the house. whenever he steps out of say, the living room, say NO to him to let him know that the living room is his space and that he does not have to freedom to do whatever he pleases and go anywhere in the house. let him know who's boss. whnever leaving him alone at home, keep him fenced in his territory with ample water and a little treats. my dog learnt to climb out of his fence and made a mess so now we keep him confined in the balcony which is as big as my room with food and water.

2) What should i look out for when i'm taking care of him?

for a pup at such a young age, be wary of ticks on his body. when briinging him out, ALWAYS leash him cuz he'll definately be curious of the new environment. try not to let him walk on grass cuz that's where he'll attract the ticks. when bathing him, remember the back of his years and his bottom. after poo-ing, clean his butt, some poo will stick to his butthole, use your finger to scratch it out. this is very importand becuz the poo is dirty and may attract bacteria and causing infection and if it really happens, your dog can't poo anymore.

3) How do i toilet train him?

buy him a toilet tray. those which you can spread a piece of newspaper on top. whenever he refuses to pee/poo on that paper and does it anywhere else, punish him my making him sit beside the tray. also, leave abit of his waste on the tray so he can recognise the smell and learn to do his business there. it'll take quite long but when he learns it, it'll save alot of trouble in the future.

4) When can i start bathing him?

bath him at least once a week to keep him from smelling. do not bath him so often cuz his fur will be too dry. after bathing him, check for smells in his ear. a baby schnauzer has floppy ears thus, the "ear shit" will be moist. using a normal human earbud, gently dig his ears. CAREFUL NOT TO POKE TOO DEEP. most important part is their nails. using a special dog nail clipper, gently clip his nail millimetres by millimetres. snipping it too deep will accidentally snip off the 'quick' which means the nail would start bleeding profusely. in order not to take risks, it is best to let the professionals do it.

5) He keeps eating his own shit! how?!

it's natural for pups to do that. whenever u spot him doing that, punish him by making him sit beside his tray agan. roll up a newspaper and act it like a cane. gently hit his shoulder or butt, NOT MOUTH! he'll soon learn that eating own's shit will result in the owner being angry and stop it.

i had alot of trouble bringing up my pup too but now he's a really obedient yet playful dog.

hope my advice helps.

good luck!

Default Re: My Schnauzer - Pepper

there are milk treats and food formula for puppies get those for him

when my schnauzer was little for the 1st 3 months we nvr bring her out until she finished all her vaccinations (all 3 of them)

as for toilet train what the others said is quite relevant so no need for me to elaborate on it

try to get your pup a cushion of his own so that he will know that its his bed and he will sleep there but then nvr restrict him to where he wanna sleep at the end of the day, dogs are terrotorial animals so he will find a place where he claimed his terrortary(should be the right spelling) and that will be his place to rest.

i was like u ( a liitle helpless and paranoid)when i first brought her home at 3weeks old and every night i would be sleeping on the couch cos her cushion is in the living room and at the slightest sound will wake mi to check on her
but at the end of the day,its worth the trouble

Default Re: My Schnauzer - Pepper

The thing with Zac (my pup) is that he's a fussy eater.

he used to eat his dry food for meals but now he don't like it anymore.

now we'll have 2 bowls for him.

one is his treat bowl where it is always beside his water bowl and filled with his dried supplements and occasional treats when leaving the house.

another one is his dinner bowl.

we don't feed him those wet dog food cuz it's really troublesome.

for dinner, we give him what we'll be having for dinner.

of course, we wash everything (including the vege) very clean to rid of the salt befire mixing it with rice for him.

it's usually a hearty meal for him and it's only for dinner.

in the morning, after bringing him out for his morning pee/poo, we'll feed him milk.

for us, we feed him COSI Pet's Milk but he likes another brand better.

you can ask pet shops, there sells a brand of milk with a chocolate flavour for puppies.

this might start to encourage your pup to drink milk.

after he drinks his milk, he cant be too active cuz he'll vomit his milk out.

at night we also brushes his teeth 3 times a week.

starting, he'll struggle but he's used to it now.

if u dun want to brush his teeth, feeding him Greenie once a week should be ok.

ALSO (sorry i'm naggy) remember to brush his fur!

=]

1-2 times a week should be ok.

pups like yours will undergo a change of furcoat soon to ensure a beautiful furcoat,

you have to brush often to reduce tangles.

sorry for being naggy n longwinded.

i get high when people get new pups.

Just went for his 2nd vaccination today.

Vet says he is too skinny need double potion of food. =(

i let him out of his play pen the whole day until when we are about to sleep then i will put him back into his play pen.

Pepper is paper trained by the pervious owner, just that he will sometime cannot wait but pee on the floor. =)

Overall he is very very good.

Doesnt really bark, even when bathing.

he only gets excited when he knows we are gonna feed him. guess the pervious owner underfeed him alot. =(

hope he can gain back the 0.6kg in time.

vet says cannot find his microchip. =.=

might have to microchip him again? =/

does this happen often?
