Murdoch University to expand its presence in Singapore
By Satish Cheney, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 14 January 2008 2108 hrs

SINGAPORE: Students in Singapore will have more opportunities to get a taste of Australian education, right here at home.

Australia's Murdoch University, which has been offering subjects through the Singapore Manufacturing Federation's (SMa) School of Management, will be making more subjects available.

It is opening an International Study Centre within the SMa School of Management at North Bridge Road. But it will not be setting up a campus in Singapore.

Murdoch will increase the subjects it offers from the current 15 majors to 25.

Murdoch says the University of New South Wales' sudden pullout from Singapore last year was not a factor in its decision to increase its presence in Singapore.

Professor Gary Martin, deputy vice-chancellor of Murdoch University, said: "The way we work with the School of Management is an entirely different model to establishing a campus here in Singapore.

"What we're drawing on here is the strength of both Murdoch University and local provider, through the School of Management."

The SMa School of Management says the close collaboration with Murdoch will help to improve its own image.

Dr Moh Chong Tau, chairman of SMa School of Management, said: "... our members will be carrying the Murdoch University name cards, as representatives of Murdoch University."

Under the new partnership, local lecturers will be granted affiliated Murdoch University lecturer status and students will be given the option to complete part of the programme in Singapore and the rest in Perth, Australia.

The new collaboration is set to take off within the next six months.

At the SMa School, about 1,000 students - a fifth of them from overseas - are taking Murdoch University courses.

The university hopes to double the number of its students by the end of next year. - CNA/ir
