But on Friday morning, Madam Ye Jinlan's nagging could have been the trigger that caused her son to allegedly bash her to death in their Kuala Lumpur home in Malaysia.
It was not clear what took place between the 69-year-old widowed hawker and her son.
Her other six children told China Press that her relations with their brother was strained as he did not like her to nag about his unemployment.
Madam Ye, who raised her children on her own after her husband's death more than 20 years ago, was unhappy that her son spent all his money on alcohol.
Her other children are married and live elsewhere, leaving just the 39-year-old suspect with her.
He used to do odd jobs such as being a production operator and a lorry driver.
Police had not released the suspect's name at press time. DAUGHTER RUSHED HOME
One of Madam Ye's daughters, Madam Zeng Xiuzhen, who is in her 40s, said she rushed home after neighbours called her.
It is not known how her death was discovered.
Madam Zeng found her mother lying motionless in the living room, while her brother paced about in the garden.
The family called the police, and the suspect gave himself up at the scene.
China Press reported that the suspect allegedly told police: 'Mum's body is inside - I did it.'
He was said to have been calm when he was handcuffed and led into a police car.
Police did not find any weapons in thehouse. Madam Ye is believed to have died from head injuries.
The suspect is expected to be charged with murder.
Madam Zeng said her brother has a bad temper and had been in a fight before.
Neighbours told China Press that they did not hear any cries for help. | | | | |

That son should at least find a job to escape the nagging.
