WHEN her boyfriend tried to take her car, 26-year-old mum of two Blythe Jarrett had only one thing on her mind - to stop him.
Never mind that she was holding her 4-month-old baby in her arms.
Jarrett allegedly climbed onto the hood of the car and held on to the windscreen, sandwiching the child between her chest and the car.
To her horror, her boyfriend took off.
Now, Jarrett and the man, Rarity Abdullah, 23, have been charged with endangering the baby's life.
The police say Abdullah, allegedly drove through a red light, swerving through traffic in St Paul, Minneapolis.
He allegedly jumped a curb with Jarrett and the baby on the hood, reported kare.com.
Witness Michael Auge said he heard Jarrett screaming for someone to 'call 911' last Tuesday. She was on the hood of a Honda Civic in his neighbour's yard. Before he could react, the driver did a U-turn and took off.
Witness Amber Pnewski estimated the car was going at 90kmh when it passed her house.
The police pulled over the car after about 2.4km and arrested the two adults.
Jarrett claimed she had jumped onto the car to prevent Abdullah from taking it.
The mother of two - she has a 7-year-old son - said she needed it to take her children to day care.
'I never imagined that this would happen,' Jarrett later told The Star Tribune.
Jarrett said the car was her lifeline. She used it to go to classes at the Minneapolis Community and Technical College, to go to the store and to visit the psychologist treating her for post-partum depression.
'I know I made a mistake,' Jarrett said. 'At the time, I didn't think my daughter would be harmed. I didn't think that he would pull out.'
Jarrett was jailed and charged with gross misdemeanour child endangerment before being released on Thursday. Abdullah faces the same charge.
Jarrett's two children have been taken from her and the car has been impounded.
