THE 49-year-old businessman from Sarawak had been in China for only a day when his family received a frightening phone call.
Mr Ling Sui Keong, who ran a family shipping business in Sibu, had apparently been kidnapped in Shenzhen.
And the caller had demanded a ransom to be paid into a bank account for his safe release.
On 7 Sep, a day after receiving the call, the family paid the ransom of US$30,000 ($45,300).
But the kidnappers changed their mind and felt it was not enough, reported China Press.
On 9 Sep, they demanded another US$100,000. Mr Ling's family told the abductors that they needed time to raise the cash.
The kidnappers did not contact them again.
Fearing the worst, Mr Ling's family made a police report four days later.
That same day, the Lings finally received word from China.
Unfortunately, it was bad news.
Mr Ling had been found unconscious at the foot of a Shenzhen hotel and was in critical condition.
Shenzhen police told Mr Ling's family he either jumped or was pushed from the seventh floor.
MrLing's wife rushed to be with him, but Mr Ling died on 15 Sep.
The Lings have asked the Malaysian Chinese Association to help them get answers from the Chinese authorities.
MCA's Public Services and Complaints Bureau head Michael Chong told The Sun it is believed that business rivalry could have been behind Mr Ling's abduction.
He also confirmed that there had been a scuffle between MrLing and his business partners. It was so serious that the Shenzhen police had to be called in.
Mr Ling's fall took place after the police had settled the matter.
