KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA on Monday launched its latest weapon against compact disc counterfeiters - two Irish Labradors called Paddy and Manny.
The dogs form the world's first anti-piracy canine unit and follow the trial use of another Labrador pair, Lucky and Flo, who made headlines in the country last year after uncovering huge pirated CD stashes.
They made such an impact on the billion-dollar black market industry here that leading pirates placed bounties on their heads.
Paddy and Manny, donated by the US-based Motion Picture Association (MPA), will begin work in April helping domestic trade and consumer affairs officials track down pirated DVDs and CDs.
'The launch of this dedicated unit to fight optical disc piracy is the first of its kind in the world,' said MPA President Michael Ellis.

Paddy, a black labrador, was found badly abused by an animal shelter before he was trained, while golden-yellow Manny was trained by a breeder.
A recent study by the MPA revealed that its member firms, which include the world's biggest movie studios, lost 6.1 billion dollars (S$8.5 billion) to worldwide piracy in 2005, with the Asia-Pacific region accounting for 1.2 billion dollars. -- AFP
