Exclamation Martial Arts Section

Ok i suggested a section on martial arts in the "Suggestions Page" but apparently it needs to hv a gd response to get approved so are there ppl who are DEEPLY interested (and currently in a martial art) ?

i noe there may be a similar thread somewhere but i was tinking of the section to hv threads that mite include the following:

1) Philosphy of the martial art (for the enthusias)
2) any real confrontations?
3) reason for joining a martial art (expect the unexpected)
4) questions abt other martial arts (tt other ppl can answer)
5) Refining Techniques (refine kicking,locks and pins,etc)
6) share ariticles of martial arts
7) recommendations (anything, frm dojo to diff styles of the martial art)
8) Counter Attacks

thats all i can tink of for now. personally im trainin in AIKIDO and it would be gr8 to be open abt other martial arts like how they attack, defend, etc.

please give me ur views, thoughts, etc. thx

2 philosophies that I know "The Pen is mightier than the sword" & "Those who live by the sword die by the sword".

By the way, I was trained in Ashihara Ryu Karate during my secondary school days. That was about 10 years ago. I was inspired to join after intimidated by some school bullies. I quit after secondary school because I pursue interest in other hobbies like bodybuilding duirng my tertiary days. I was a brown belt then. However, the skills I learnt was never put to use. I never met with violent confrontations before. Confrontations were settled in non violent ways.

One thing I learnt is to appreciate simple yet effective moves. It may me look at things the way I never knew. Martial arts was a sport fit for everyone from the young to the old. Although I stop practising for 10 years, the reflex moves were deeply ingrained & I even learned to evolved the moves to suit my style. Martial arts is never a fixed group of techniques. You true fighting style will reflect the character in you. Hong Jia Quan & Yong Chun Quan evolved from Shaolin although 1 is a hard style the other is a soft style.

Though Karate mainly consist of striking techniques, Ashihara Ryu mainly specialise in counterattacking from the opponents blind spots through our footwork & positioning. My sensei was also trained in Hapkido so he also improvised a few basic arm lock techniques into our sparring practise. Unlike Tae Kwon Do, which is unified in the world, Karate is like Chinese Kung Fu, consist of many schools & styles. Few famous schools are Shotokan Ryu,founded by the Father of Modern Karate(Can't recall his name), Shoto was his pen name. Wado Ryu, influenced by Japanese Ju-jitsu, famous for combining locking & striking techniques, Kyo Ku Shin Kai, also known as Oyama Ryu, well received by the Americans, famous for their extreme demolition moves. They break anything from ice to concrete & they also hammer nails into boards with their bare hands.

They are many schools worth mentioning but there are too many. Aikido is worth practising. Like Taichi, it is based on a soft style using the theory of the sphere. Keep practising. Osu!!

I train in Aikido. a supposed Non violent martial art. unlike other martial arts, this one takes very much longer time to be skilled enough to be able to use it outside. mite even take abt 10years (or longer). thus some ppl think its not practical since it takes a long time to learn and master. seen any of Steven Seagal's movies? he only uses Aikido techniques in these movies. and they can hv devastating results. in aikido ur supposed to divert the opponents strength back at them without the need to use any of ur own. this makes Aikido unique in the sense tt Girls and old ppl can learn it. also has locks and pins using minimal or no effort and causing opponents to lose balance and take advantage of tt moment frm there. we also learn escape techniques where we learn how to escape when other foreign technqiues are applied against us and open for us to perform Counter Technques. becoz of its complexities, tts y it takes very long. oldest person to train is like 106 years and 90 years old. no need to mellow down. some of the U.S. army uses some of the AIkido Technques to aid soldiers who carry heavy loads so they dun tire easily. they put it in their CQC. however while its a defensive martial art, one can use it in offence if their understanding of its principals is deep. we also train armed and unarmed and to disarm with a vairety of weapons.

this martial art is derived from an ancient japanese martial art called "Daito Ryu Aikijujitsu" where it was widely used by ninjas and shogans to defeat Armed sumarai while being unarmed themselves. Has the essence of many other martial arts.

The founder of the martial art learned Jujitsu,Aikijujitsu, fencing and discussed martial art issues with the Founder of Judo.

its the "youngest" martial art in the world of martial arts. and has many other styles. Pre War Aikido was aikido tt was meant to kill with one technique. Post war is to neutrailise without serious harm.

2day AIkido is used in trainin Tokyo's Riot Police.

i heard tt during the olden days, the founder of aikido trained japanese soldiers in Aikido to fight the US,etc. duno if its true.

sanshou is something similar to muay thai, except we don practise knee and elbow jabs, instead we sweep and throw our opponent, it originate from different martial art school in China, like hong jia quan, wing chun, every clan has every clan's different method of teaching..but it is more or less the same...i purely learn sanshou, but my shifu himself is a martial artist, so sometimes i will get to learn some chinese martial arts and taiji...

Live life to the fullest..Cheers:rock:

I had quite alot of experiences in martial art.I started with karate, taekwondo.Eventually settle down in boxing, muaythai and MMA.MMA is mixed martial arts.people who noe UFC,prideFC will noe wads MMA.Its very very effective and deadly proven in the ring haha.
If u would wan to learn a effective martial art.go for muaythai, boxing, sanshou or brazilian jitsu.Try to avoid traditional martial arts.

There are a few places that train MMA. The one I know of is MMA Academy at North Canal Road. 6438 5788....

Also there is Kreation Jiu Jitsu (Email: kreationjits@hotmail.com)

Good luck! Mixed martial arts is the next big sport, it is now one of the top 5 sports in the US!

i dun agree wif ur point sayin that only muaythai, boxing, sanshou or brazilian jitsu are considered effective martial art. im sure all forms are effective, its juz how skilled the person is and how long it takes for a person trainnig in that art to be able to use it well. if whichever Traditional martial arts are considered ineffective, i tink they wouldnt hav survive for so long. juz my 2cents worth
