I'm planning to go into the design industry. Hoping to work in front of a computer doing my work at my own space. But, is there a market place for this kind of job?

You can always do freelance work, but you'll need to know how to do some marketing and get some reputation. If you have someone to rely on for 3-4 years, you can start doing freelance work (:

Freelance is great, provided you make an effort to build up your network, your circle.

There are some jobs in the market that allows you to work from home, but that will depend ALOT on luck in finding such jobs, coz these jobs are damm popular lars. hahas. work frm home lehs,


But basically, this industry is about meeting clients, associating with clients and thats how you create the impression for a good wide network.

Even if you do freelance job, meeting up with them and discussing about facts and such is much better than skype. I've even heard of designers who flew to other continents for a big design job ...

hello guys... my 2nd post in this forum =)

jus wanna drop a few lines of advise. being someone in this industry for like 4 years... i still haven see any great future ahead. unless u r one (out of a few thousands) who r lucky enuff to be a director...or some high flyer...

freelance projects merely gives u additional income to meet ur needs. there r many small timers out there taking big projects for a few hundred bucks only, while the big firm only take projects worth a few grands... 1 simple project only nid 1 person to do it. if u r lucky enuff, u get the job as a freelance... if u dun, buy a scissor, open ur door, go downstair and start cutting grass ..lol

I agreed.. i've been in the market for almost 2 years... with about 1 yr++ experience... to be honest.. it's rather hard unless you're really skilled, have a good network... it's also hard to find a good company that pays good as well...

My advice is look for a full time design job, rather than freelance, unless you really have a very big and good network. You can work full time and at the same time, take in freelance projects, provided you have free time and energy to do the freelance projects.

let me share my experience with you. i have just finish my diploma in poly and currently waiting for NS. and i have just got myself a job as a web designer in a well known company. it pays considerably well for a fresh grad and i am currently taking up freelance projects as well. quite busy though.

i am only 20 and the company accepts me, so i can say that the market out there is quite good. if u do a search in jobsdb.com, there's actually a lot of job offers out there. all you need is a strong portfolio.

can you say how much do they pay? is it 1500 - 2500 S$ / less / more ?
