A man armed with a knife stabbed three police officers on a street in Tokyo's Nerima district before two officers blasted gunshots into his leg, allowing police to apprehend him, law enforcers said.

Police said that a woman made an emergency call at about 12:30 p.m., Thursday, saying that her son had run outside with a knife. A 47-year-old officer cycled to the scene from a local police box. When he tried to question the suspect, the man got agitated and stabbed him.

Two officers, 43 and 46, arrived at the scene soon afterwards in a police car and tried to apprehend the man, but they got into a struggle and the man stabbed the 46-year-old officer in the chest and stomach, leaving him seriously injured. He also slashed the face of the other officer.

Two of the three officers then pulled out guns and blasted three shots at the man, two of which hit his right leg.

Police immediately arrested the 29-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and obstruction of police duties. Police said the man was a local resident. He had reportedly being receiving hospital treatment for a mental disorder.

After the shooting the man was taken to hospital for treatment. His injuries were reportedly not life threatening.

The area where the incident occurred was in a quiet residential area about 600 meters south of Kamishakujii Station on the Seibu Shinjuku Line.

A 59-year-old man working at a nearby firm described the incident.

"There were two officers trying to apprehend a man who was swinging a knife around on the street," he said. "One of them pulled out a gun and I heard a sound going 'bang, bang.' There was a woman shouting out 'Stop it!' I can't imagine this sort of incident happening in a quiet place like this!"

Another passerby in the area said, "They were struggling and I was wondering what was going on, when I saw an officer curled up on the ground, with a stab wound in his stomach. Straight afterwards I heard three gunshots." (Mainichi)
