A long time ago, i asked one of my good friend A to help me translate the lyrics of yi qian ling yi ye coz i really like the song (reason being i used to watch the chiense show with this song starring fann wong) and it really brought memories of my chidhood. i listen to it soo much i can remember the chorus but i tot why not learn the hanyu pinyin, then i can get the pronounciations straight...

S, another colleague of mine was kinda pissed at me... saying i dun deserve the hanyu pinyin coz i dun understand chinese. and that i'm not really appreciating it for it, but juz for fun...she actually THREW the translated lyrics away (coz my friend painstakingly wrote it on a piece of paper)... not letting me have it at all.

is that fair? saying i dun deserve to listen and appreciate chinese music juz bcoz i'm not chinese?

i'm sure there are a lot of chinese out there who likes korean and jap songs but dun understand 3/4 of wat they're saying...

i like indonesian songs too but i only know , like half of wat they're saying...

i was soo pissed... but that didnt stop me from listening to other languages music tho...
listening to malay and eng songs oni can get a bit sian, you know!!

I think listening to song doesn't concern whether appreciating or not. Like you said, some listen to Jap or Korean song which more than 1/2 in which they don't know. But that doesn't mean they don't appreciate it. Hack care about your friend... Chinese people can only listen chinese song? Malays can only listen Malay song? What kind of ridiculous reason is this... tell him to wake up his idea... =P

gee that's harsh. if she was so aggravated by that she could think again and maybe sit down with you and explain to you what the hanyu pinyin or the meaning of the song. instead of just throwing it away. ouch. you don't have to be of that particular racial composition to be allowed to listen to the music. as long as you appreciate it, that's what matters.
