Cup Lufthansa jet 'within split second of crashing' after wingtip hits runway in freak winds

These pictures show the heart-stopping seconds when an airliner came within inches of disaster as a wing tip scraped a runway.
A sudden crosswind from hurricane Emma had sent the Airbus 320, carrying 137 passengers, skewing like a paper dart as it tried to land.

With the pilot fighting desperately to straighten it up, the left wing dipped perilously towards the tarmac.
Terrified passengers were screaming and crying but the captain, given just a split second to react, somehow managed to keep control, lift his plane away from the ground and circle round for a successful landing.
"Those few seconds were indescribable," said one shaken passenger.
The weekend drama, caught on video by a plane-spotter, unfolded as a Lufthansa flight from Munich arrived at Hamburg airport at the height of a storm, with winds of up to 155mph.
A spokesman for Lufthansa said some of the passengers were badly shaken.

The plane skidded on the runway, forcing the pilot to take off and land again

"Many did not handle it well," said Wolfgang Weber. "Some were near tears."
A spokesman for German Flight Safety, Axel Raab, said that the attempted landing was more dramatic than any incident he could recall in German domestic aviation history.
"It's extreme - I haven't yet seen anything like that at a German airport," Mr Raab said. "The pilot was a real hero."
But the 39-year-old pilot, identified only as Oliver A, has modestly brushed aside these plaudits. "We have done this so many times in training it seemed like routine."
