According to a post-mortem report, the toddler, Chin Syan Ping, was believed to have been physically abused. She suffered a powerful blow to her forehead.
Scald marks were found on her body and face.
On Friday, police obtained a remand order to detain her father, who is a 22-year-old cook, and mother, an 18-year-old housewife, reported the New Straits Times.
They will be held until next Wednesday, to facilitate investigations.
The couple looked morose as they were mobbed by photographers at the court.
ANOTHER BABY
They merely exchanged brief glances and did not speak to each other. The couple have another girl, aged 6 months.
Syan Ping's body was released to the her paternal uncle at hospital.
Her uncle described the child as smart and talkative. 'She had the sweetest smile, with a beautiful set of teeth,' he said.
On Wednesday night, the unconscious baby was rushed to a private clinic in Skudai, Johor, by her mother at 8.30pm.
The doctor then told the woman to take her child to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital.
However, the baby was taken to a private hospital instead and was pronounced dead on arrival at 12.44am on Thursday.
The baby's mother had lodged a police report after her daughter's death, claiming that her daughter's injuries were caused by a fall when hot water spilled on her.
It was reported that the doctor who attended to the baby reported to police that the injuries on the baby's neck and face were not consistent with the explanations given by the mother.
The woman also claimed that the baby had breathing difficulties after the fall.
The baby was originally under the care of her grandmother but was handed back about two weeks ago to the mother as the grandmother was ill.

Said the grandmother: 'Syan Ping's dead. Now all I have is her 6-month-old sister.'
She told Sin Chew Daily that her daughter-in-law was a loner and would stay inside her room the whole day with her baby.
During the floods last year, she stayed in her flooded room, which measures 4.6m by 5.3m, even though the water was at least half a metre deep.
With the toddler's parents in remand, Syan Ping's uncle arranged her funeral.
As Chinese customs forbid the deceased's older kin to attend the burial, only undertakers and a Taoist priest were present at her burial, which was delayed for an hour due to rain on Friday afternoon.
The family's landlord, who did not want to be identified, told The Star that he did not believe the girl's parents were abusive.
'She (Chin) was a very shy and obedient girl. The couple were very nice people. They rarely scolded the girl, let alone beat her. I do not believe they abused her.'
