AVID sportsmen and weekend warriors will soon be able to jog, skate or cycle from one corner of the island to another without stepping onto any roads.
One big piece of that goal became reality on Friday, when Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan, launched the 42-km long Eastern Coastal Park Connector Network (PCN).
The Eastern Coastal PCN is part of the National Parks Board (NParks)'s Park Connector Network (PCN) - an islandwide network of linear open spaces that link up major parks, nature sites and housing estates in Singapore.
It links up East Coast beach parks, Changi Beach, Pasir Ris and other parks in the eastern part of Singapore, such as Bedok Reservoir Park and Bedok Town Park.
Mr Mah said: 'The Park Connector Network (PCN) is an important part of our plans to transform Singapore into a city-in-a-garden - one where our city is nestled within lush greenery and we are shaded from the sun by the overarching canopies of abundant clusters of trees.'
With the completion of the Eastern Coastal PCN, Singaporeans can use it to get from their homes to the parks, such as the popular East Coast Park and Pasir Ris Park, for recreational activities.
Lined with greenery and shielded from traffic noise and exhaust fumes, the entire PCN will also provide shady and convenient shortcuts to bus stops, MRT stations and markets.
