Jealous HK hubby pours acid on sleeping wife
March 10, 2007
SHE was asleep at the time and woke up screaming in pain.
The mother-of-two ran to her neighbour's home and banged on the door for help. She tried to help wipe off the acid with a towel, but it was too late.
Some of the acid had trickled down her throat and her intestines had eroded.
By the time she was rushed to hospital, doctors said that her face was disfigured and that she might lose her sight.
Her husband, a 64-year-old Hong Kong man, is said to have suspected that his wife, who is 26 years his junior, was having an affair.
When the police arrived at their flat, they found him pacing the floor.
He has been arrested and may be charged for attempted murder.
The couple's 12-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son were in school during the incident.
Their mother, known only as Madam Deng, had earlier sought shelter at a refuge centre with her children after complaining of abuse from her husband.
She had also taken him to court twice, but was persuaded to return home after he promised to turn over a new leaf.
They had met more than 10 years ago in Hainan, China but moved to Hong Kong after she gave birth to their two children.
He worked at a drug rehabilitation centre while she washed dishes and sold vegetables for a living.
But a year ago, the husband became suspicious and often checked Madam Deng's handphone for unfamiliar numbers.
He would call those numbers and explode in anger if a man answered.
Soon Li quit his job to spy on his wife full-time.
That was also when he started punching and kicking her, she claimed, often leaving her face bruised.
He had earlier appeared in court twice and was sent for psychiatric treatment.
He was due for a hospital check-up on the day of the acid attack.
