JC boy hurt in Woodlands hit-and-run
Teen staggers home bleeding
Driver says sorry, speeds off
December 18, 2007
JUST one word: Sorry.
That was all this 18-year-old boy got from the driver who knocked him down and left him bloodied before speeding off.
The incident happened on Friday around 3pm at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 3 and Street 21.
The victim, Zheng Feng Peng, is a National Junior College student.
The apology was cold comfort to the teenager who ended up with eight stitches on his right leg and several cuts on his hands, legs and back.
BANDAGED FOR 2 WEEKS
His right leg will have to be bandaged for 14 days before the stitches can be removed.
The impact of the collision broke the teenager's umbrella, which he was using in the heavy downpour.
He had to stagger home bleeding in the rain.
The teenager told Lianhe Wanbao that he had been at the junction waiting for the traffic light to turn green before crossing the road.
Suddenly, while he was crossing the road, a black car coming from Woodlands Street 32 turned into Avenue 3, knocking him down.
Recalled Feng Peng: 'I rolled onto the bonnet and fell to the ground. My right leg was cut, and my hands and back were injured.'
He said the driver didn't bother to alight from the vehicle to check on him.
'The driver just opened the car door with one word 'sorry' before driving away.'
He described the driver, who was wearing sunglasses, a black shirt and dark-coloured pants, as being in his 20s.
When Feng Peng got home, his mother scrambled to send him to hospital in a taxi.
His medical fees came up to about $90. The family also rang the police while in hospital.
A police spokesman confirmed the incident.
Witnesses can call the hotline at 1800 5471818.
Feng Peng's father, service engineer Zheng Yong Qing, 45, was out at sea when he heard what had happened to his only child.
They had migrated from China and have been living in Woodlands for nine years.
Said Mr Zheng of his son: 'I was really worried.
'He could have died.'
