A third-year high school girl was hit and killed by a freight train in Kagamiishimachi, Fukushima Prefecture, early Sunday.
According to the police, the 17-year-old student was struck by the train at JR Kagamiishi Station at about 4:35 a.m. and was killed instantly.
The train driver reportedly noticed the girl standing on the tracks and applied the emergency brake, but was unable to stop in time. The station is unattended at night.
The police suspect the girl intended to commit suicide.
