The IRs are coming, so... Students flock to tourism courses
March 09, 2008
COURSES on hospitality and tourism are hot now. And one reason is the upcoming opening of the two integrated resorts here.

Melissa Leong, 20, a second-year student at the Management Development Institute Of Singapore (MDIS), said: 'I chose my course partly because of the booming tourist developments in Singapore.'
The former Serangoon Junior College student is pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in international tourism and hospitality management.
And one of her modules took her to Sentosa for three days - to observe visitors there and research tourist demographics.
East Asia Institute of Management (EASB) student Angeline Lee, 20, chose to go into the hospitality industry because she said it gives her the chance to meet people.
EASB's School of Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Management offers degree programmes accredited by the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff University and Queen Margaret University.
MDIS' hospitality degrees are awarded by the UK's University of Sunderland and Australia's Southern Cross University.
A huge draw of such programmes is that they offer direct honours degrees.
'After our foundation degree, we can go straight to the honours in our third year,' Melissa said. She will complete her degree a year faster than her peers in public universities.
Students are also getting more hands-on training.
Both EASB and MDIS recently set up specialised hospitality training centres, which simulate a hotel environment. Students can learn basic skills in hotel room management and food and beverage services, for example.
There are also internship opportunities for students to pick up practical skills and working experience.
Through group projects, they learn about teamwork and communication skills.
Angeline said: 'Working with some of my foreign classmates who may not have a good command of English will help me deal with non-English speaking hotel guests in the future.'
