SGC$: 1,291.38 Bank: 0.00 Total SGC$: 1,291.38 | I'm sure many of the sgclubbers here have either went for an internship, planning to do so or hesitating to do so. I personally opt not to (since mine is not compulsory) simply because of its meagre pay and stories I've heard. From what I heard, internships are merely long hours, never satisfied bosses, lots of insignificant work you are supposed to perform for your seniors, and unfufilling. I would rather go for a temp job during the holidays. Only advantage is that internships, especially if it is for a government or reputable company, looks good on your resume and thus increases your employability in the future. So guys, what are your experiences of internships? Do you like it? Emerge out of it learned? Or just a plain waste of time? Do indicate your internship pay (poly or uni) and industry. Rock on fellas' |

SGC$: 14.90 Bank: 467.60 Total SGC$: 482.50 | internship is supposed to give undergrads a taste of what the working life is like. the problem is that typically, the person-in-charge or HR is not 'prepared' in terms of work scope or the time to commit to guide the interns. pay is not everything. this initial exposure, especially for those who had not even tried part-time work, is quite important to give a glimpse of working life. it is up to the intern to ask questions, ask for relevant work, talk to the colleagues to see if there's something else that they can learn in the 10 or 12 weeks of internship... just my 2 cents' worth. |

SGC$: 104.20 Bank: 51.63 Total SGC$: 155.83 | I went for internship during my ITE days. It was horrible. Not becuz internship are all horrible, but specially only for my company. The boss ask me to wash fish tank, ask me to cyclecount everyday(i'm in the logisitics line), nva teach anything new, worst is make me attach to a supervisor who noes nothing! They didnt treat attachment students like students. They treat us worst than the employees there. It's was the most horrible days. I will not ever go back to that company ever again! If poly were to attach me there again*touchwood*, I sure go see course manager and get it change. My pay there was $500 tt time, $50 more than poly students. ![]() Hand in Hand we walk by... SGC$: 1,291.38 Bank: 0.00 Total SGC$: 1,291.38 | Yea I do agree but most of my peers have complained to the HR to no avail because they have work commitments of their own to really bother about them. Do you think having a barrage of temporary work experiences is comparable or below having an internship? |

SGC$: 14.90 Bank: 467.60 Total SGC$: 482.50 | i think if the work scope is really really way different from expectation, it is only fair that the course coordinator is informed accordingly. that way, the course coordinator can prevent future problems if they send other interns to that same company, or they can write off that company from their list altogether  |

SGC$: 1,472.52 Bank: 0.00 Total SGC$: 1,472.52 | The objective of an internship is to experience the job that you are interested to take on in future. The aim should never be about money or easy working hours at all. If you see it as a waste of time, you are doing the wrong internship. ![]() To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. SGC$: 14.90 Bank: 467.60 Total SGC$: 482.50 | it really depends on what sort of temp job. say, you're studying to work in the banking industry. no amount of McDonald's experience will equate rubbing shoulders with real-life bankers or even the execs who support them. |

SGC$: 104.20 Bank: 51.63 Total SGC$: 155.83 | for my case, I work wad I study. but the prob is tt the department manager has pass down messages b4 I came in, tt all staffs must not teach the students anything extra, as in their doc.s etc; I think tis is ridiculous. u dun wan ppl learn, den u shldn't take us. Make us do all the shit job for you. And worst thing, my lecturer who is in-charge of the grp of us in the west one, cannot make it oso. I complain to her, tell her wad happen, but it seems like nth has change. She did called up my manger n dunno say wad, but I nva see the situation change for the better oso. Worst still, at the final day of my attachement, the manger den ask me go learn how to do their delivery order. Nonsense! ![]() Hand in Hand we walk by... SGC$: 4.00 Bank: 10.10 Total SGC$: 14.10 | yeap.... it depends a lot cuz diff companies have different reasons for hiring interns... some do it to get free labour... others to "secure" the good ones before they enter e workforce... i am doing now and so far i think it's not bad... my boss is okay and the workload is ok too... but i do hear of a lot of interns who do sai kang for very little pay.... but, i still believe that it is a good experience... cuz once u enter the office, u will know what it is like and how they conduct their business although u r only an intern... in general, i found that they are more willing to share info with intern than with temp staff... |

SGC$: 71.40 Bank: 596.34 Total SGC$: 667.74 | i think its important to do internship no matter the low pay coz this is the time u will actually learn how to communicate with the staffs and boss. Even though my intership is only 440 and i kept doing the same stuffs, i felt i gain alot of knowledge about the real working world. Sometimes i was even ask to clean the window and clean the floor but hey, tis is oso part of learning lol. It is like when u enter a big organization, and if u wan to be the leader of that organization, u have to learn what actually are the people at the lower rank are doing and how do they actually work and u will know their feelings |

So now, stuck in school, doing company project, but not get paid at all. <..> ![]() Domain :: To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. SGC$: 1,472.52 Bank: 0.00 Total SGC$: 1,472.52 | Just to share what I did for my attachment... I took over an existing project from another attachment student and continued on the project requirements. It was fun because my partner and I were learning more than what was taught in school. Naturally, because we enjoyed what we were doing, we scored an A for the attachment. The company offered us another 2 months of contract employment because we were good, but my partner didn't take it up. I took up the 2 months of work since it was school holidays anyway and was paid $1.2k per month. For a poly student at that time (many years back), it was a big amount so the attachment was quite fulfilling to me. ![]() Just my 2 dinars. ![]() To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 10 or greater.
