SINGAPORE'S teen royalty were crowned last night at Zouk.
And it was the underdogs who had their day.
Phua Shih Wen, 18, and Colin Ang, 18, were named Prom Queen and Prom King at the Hollywood Glamour Inter-JC pageant.
They each walked away with almost $1,400 worth of prizes and a one-year contract with Looque Models.
The winners didn't get the loudest cheers from the crowd.
Neither were they ranked highly in the online poll.
SURPRISE WIN
So the win came as a surprise to many, including themselves.
Colin, a Hwa Chong Institution graduate, was the tallest male contestant in the pageant, standing at 1.93m.
He said: 'Initially, I wanted to quit the contest because I didn't think I stood a chance.
'I knew my height would be an advantage but I'm shy, and I wasn't sure if I could overcome it.
'But with the support of my friends, I just decided to go through with it and give it my all.'
Shih Wen, who is from Jurong Junior College, was so estatic that she was close to tears.
She said: 'I really didn't expect this, it's very shocking.
'The other contestants are very beautiful.
'I didn't think of being a model before, but now I'd like to give it a try.'
Unlike other beauty pageants, contestants for the Hollywood Glamour pageant were talent-scouted at their schools' prom nights.
One of the judges, Miss Katrina McCrindle of international modelling agency Looque Models, said the winners showed good personality and presence on stage.
Miss McCrindle, 23, winner of The New Paper New Face contest 2002, said of Colin: 'He's tall and his looks are very edgy.'
Her pick for Queen was Shih Wen.
She said of Shin Wen: 'She's got a very natural sweet look.'
CROWD FAVE
One of the crowd favourites for Queen was Marilyn Liew of Anglo-Chinese Junior College.
She didn't win the big one, but she won four sub-categories: Miss Popular, Miss Personality, Miss Elegance and Beautiful Nails.
The winners were picked by a panel of judges from Looque Models, which was also one of the event's sponsors.
Other sponsors include New Urban Male, Perlini's Silver, L'Oreal and Hoyu.
Modelling contracts and a total of $15,000 worth of prizes were up for grabs.
