JAKARTA - ENGINE trouble forced an Indonesian passenger plane to make an emergency landing in East Java province on Friday, an airport official said.
The Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-200 was en route from Jakarta to the East Javanese town of Malang when it was forced to divert to the city of Surabaya, around 80-kilometres away in the same province, Juanda airport duty manager Besar Kusdianto said.
'An engine trouble indicator went off and the pilot decided to land in Surabaya as a precaution,' Mr Kusdianto said, adding that the plane landed normally and no passengers were hurt.
The plane, which landed at 8.50 am at Juanda airport, underwent repairs for four hours before continuing on to its original destination.
The Indonesian government says it is trying to improve transport safety in the archipelago nation of 17,000 islands, which depends on air and sea links.
Freqeunt accidents have been blamed on old planes and ships, poor maintenance and insufficient investment in infrastructure despite booming passenger numbers. -- AFP
