Dirty, messy home is their operating theatre
THEIR home was filthy, the place scattered with drugs and syringes.
But these were the tools of their trade.
They were what police found on Wednesday when they arrested HaNguyen, 48, and Zbigniew Makowski, 62.
The couple, from San Jose, California, were arrested on suspicion of practising medicine without a licence and for child endangerment, AP reported.
They allegedly performed illegal and disfiguring cosmetic surgery on clients in their home.
One woman, who received a facelift and tummy tuck from Nguyen, now has thick 8-cm scars next to each ear, scars above each eyebrow and under her lower lip and a 38-cm scar across her stomach, said California Medical Board spokesman Candis Cohen.
'We want the community to know and stay away from these people,' MsCohen said.
Four children were also removed from their home by child protective services, the authorities said.
Nguyen and Makowski are in jail in Santa Clara. It is not known if they have engaged lawyers.
WELFARE
Medical board investigators said that all the victims were Vietnamese.
The authorities were alerted to the couple's activities by a former client of Nguyen's.
The client alleged that Nguyen was performing cosmetic surgery in her home, earning as much as US$500 ($760) a day. But she was also on welfare at the time.
The medical board had already investigated Nguyen in 2003 for performing a botched genital surgery. But the case was not pursued as the woman who made the complaint had moved away.
Nguyen has never been licensed as a physician in California, according to the medical board.
Makowski was her alleged accomplice, transporting patients to the house and helping clean wounds, the authorities said.
The couple will appear in court today
