Total SGC$: 0 | Between friends, money can break friendships.
I know of this lady through a ladies' group (not tai tais) I belong to. We would meet once in a long while for a meal to catch up on each other's news. Through the years the group has diminished to just 4 of us. We are all not exactly buddy buddy with each other but we do keep in touch via emails and the occasional meals. What we learn as time goes by are the individual problems faced by each one of us.
Three months ago, this lady sms'ed me asking for a $300 loan. It was no secret in our group that her husband was/still is, I think, an addicted gambler. This lady said the loan was for her two young children's schooling expenses as her monthly salary has dried up from paying household bills, food and groceries. We had another ladies' gathering and I handed the money to this lady, telling her it's a gift from my husband.
Five days later, this lady emailed me for a $500 loan. I was so upset I 'blasted' her via email for taking my husband's goodwill for granted. When I contacted the other two ladies in our group, we discovered this lady has been borrowing money from them too, giving the same excuse as the loan was for her children's needs. We were so dissappointed that this lady has assumed we will not tell anyone about her asking us for loans and when she found out we knew, she avoided our emails, our calls and smses.
Yes, it is good to help friends in need. If this lady desperately needs money for her children, anyone will help, right? She is working no doubt but with her husband being a gambler, it is highly suspicious that she borrowed money to help him pay off his debts. That is something whereby I and many others I believe, would be disgusted and unwillingly to help. There would be no end to this lady's expectations of friends rushing to her help right?
Although I did not give her the $500 loan as it was too much and too soon after the gift of $300, I felt that it was totally unfair for my husband to have to cough out his hard-earned salary to help my friend settle her husband's debts.
I have guilty feelings still about her children but if she avoids me because I refuse to let her have the loan, then what kind of friend is she, right? |

Total SGC$: 1,221.57 | This really teached us a lesson, doesn't it? It reminded me of what my bf told me about the beggers at the hawker centre. They request for money because they have no food. When you offer to buy them a bowl of noodles, they walk away. So, they are most likely just asking for money so that they could smoke or drink with it.
