CNA ICA officers seize four vehicles modified for smuggling goods
SINGAPORE : Four vehicles have been seized by Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at the Woodlands Checkpoint in a span of 16 hours since Sunday afternoon.
All the vehicles had been "creatively modified" to smuggle contraband items in hidden compartments.
The modifications include a speaker box, a door panel and even a fuel tank.
The ICA officers also seized 461 cartons of cigarettes and 2,810 uncensored optical discs.
The estimated customs duty and GST payable on the goods would have been at least $35,000.
The items and the four Malaysian drivers have been handed over to the Singapore Customs for further investigations.
First time offenders can be fined up to a maximum of 20 times the amount of duty evaded.
For second or subsequent convictions, offenders can be jailed for up to two years and fined.
The offenders also face further fines based on the amount of GST evaded.
