ALL Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilots moving to the Airbus 380 fleet will get a pay rise - $700 a month for captains and $450 for first officers, the Industrial Arbitration Court (IAC) ruled on Monday.
Only those who do not meet the minimum salary level after the adjustment will get more - enough to bring them to $10,700 for captains and $6,050 for first officers.
In making this ruling on Monday, the IAC Monday rejected an application by SIA pilots for all Boeing 777 and Airbus 345 pilots making the switch to get a $1,400 pay hike for captains and $900 for first officers.
IAC President Justice Chan Seng Onn also turned down SIA management's request that pilots already earning more than the agreed maximum for A380 pilots - $16,500 for captains and $9,250 for first officers - should not receive any increment at all.
He met both sides on Monday morning more than two months after SIA and Air Line Pilots Association-Singapore (Alpa-S) had turned to the court because they could not agree on some points pertaining to an earlier judgement made by the IAC on May 25 with regards to the A380 pay issue.
In his judgement, Justice Chan said, 'I hope that both SIA and Alpa-S will work together expeditiously and constructively to ensure a smooth conversion of the SIA captains and first officers from the existing fleet to the new SIA fleet of A380s.'
SIA is the first to fly the A380 superjumbo, which is the biggest commercial jet ever built.
Welcoming the IAC ruling, Mr Loh Oun Hean, SIA's divisional vice-president for industrial relations said, 'Everything is very clear now. We are glad that there is a finality to the issue and we can now move on.'
Alpa-S president Captain P.James added, 'We accept the judgement and we are glad that the ambiguities have been removed.'
But he said, operationally, there will be some issues with the Boeing 777 and A345 pilots and officers because of the long-established company policy that the pay of those who move to a different fleet should be the difference between the minimum salaries of the fleet they are on and that of the new fleet.
That being the case, he said the B777 and A345 pilots and officers may feel 'shortchanged' if they make the switch to A380, or may not be incentivised to join the A380 fleet.
About two-thirds of SIA pilots and officers now fly the B777 or A345.
