Ohio school to review security plans after shooting
THERE were 26 security cameras in the Ohio school, and yet 14-year-old Asa Coon was able to get in and shoot four people before killing himself.
Public schools chief Eugene Sanders was to present a plan yesterday to address whether additional security measures are needed.
This comes after Asa's shooting spree on Wednesday at the SuccessTech Academy alternative school (above). Asa managed to walk down the hallway of his school with two guns and start shooting.
The police have been checking video footage for clues and police chief Michael McGrath said that a classmate could have let him in through a back door.
Students said that the school had metal detectors which were used intermittently. None were in operation on the day of the shooting.
So, how did Asa get past an armed security guard? Mr McGrath said he could not comment.
According to preliminary investigations, Asa entered the school, a five-storey converted office building, and went to a bathroom on one of the upper floors.
GUNS, AMMUNITION
There, he changed clothes and took items out of a duffel bag, possibly the weapons, and put them on his body, Mr McGrath said.
Police found the two guns, .22- and .38-calibre revolvers, a box of ammunition for each gun and three tactical folding knives, all on or near Asa's body, the police chief said.
School officials are also investigating how a number of warning signs from Asa, including threats made last week, apparently went unheeded.
Asa had a history of mental health problems and had apparently threatened to commit suicide while in a mental health facility, according to juvenile court records.
Armed with two revolvers and wearing black jeans, black nail polish and a Marilyn Manson T-shirt, Asa fired eight times and shot two teachers and two students.
One teacher is still in hospital in a stable condition.
Asa then shot himself behind his right ear. Coroner Frank Miller ruled the death a suicide. -- AP.
