I have more than 10 hamsters during my secondary and primary school life. Some tips that i would advice people who are getting hamsters and on caring for hamsters would be firstly:
- Get a cage (better with those that are wired, as those enclosed plastic cages would be less "airy" and further more, you could let them climb up and down on the wires ) If you have many hamsters, reccommended to get the "condo" size cages (can be found at pets shops)
- For the accessories in the cages, you can get a food bowl, water bottle for them to drink (with a tip for them to drink the water from), a "hamster wheel" for them to exercise in, and a small house (optional, for me as i have many hamsters at that time, most of my hamsters can't get into the house as they are too fat and they will chew on the house plastic, so i just let them cuddle up together and put more straw around them instead of having a house), and chewing block (optional, it is for them to chew on, can be found at pet shops)
- straws or hamsters beddings (a must, as they need it to make their "nest" or play with them, and also use that to clean themselves) You must change the beddings at least every week or 2-3 times per week so that it will keep their cages fresh and clean.
- u don't have to bath the hamsters, as firstly, they are too small and would run around if u try to rinse them with water, and secondly, they might catch a cold. If u really want to bath them, u can get bathing powder (for me its optional, can be found at all pet shops or hamsters shops, and u don't really need to bath them as they will clean themselves up like cats and they will use the straws provided to clean themselves)
- Food!! The most important thing when u get a pet. You can get hamsters food from pet shops (i think at serangoon north area there are many hamsters shops that sell hamsters food and pellets, and also sell hamster "water", a type of drink for hamsters, u don't really need it as the food is enough to provide them with the nutrition they need)
- You can give them very small amount of bread, not recommended though, as these are human food, might not suit the hamsters, if u want to give them some snacks, u can get those hamsters snacks at pets shops or alternatively u can give them very small amount of bread occasionally, and would not cause any harm to them (thats what i give my hamsters when they get "bored" with their food and they love it)
I have two different species of hamsters, dwarf hamsters and syrian hamsters (aka golden hamsters). You must not place these two species of hamsters together as they will bite each other until they...
The differences between these two hamsters is dwarf hamsters are small, whereas syrian hamsters are twice the length and size of dwarf hamsters (can grow longer than your palm).
For me my syrian and dwarf hamsters have lived for more than 7 years. But the rough estimated age for hamsters are around 5 years.
And in addition, hamsters are a great companion as they are cute, furry and....cute ..have fun playing with your hamsters .
