SGC$: 73.92 Bank: 719.83 Total SGC$: 793.75 | Tips and tricks to care for your clothes You may not care to have your clothes last a long time. You may be a fashion follower who likes to change your wardrobe four times a year. If you're frugal, you'll do it at the thrift store, and since thrift store clothing purchases are often second hand, even then, you'll want to take care of your clothes so they'll look good through the season. If you wear the same clothes for several seasons (or the same season for several years), you'll need to take even more care to keep them looking good. Either way, taking care of the clothes you have is frugal: Don't dry them in a dryer unless you have to. Dryers wear out fabric quickly. They also set stains and make seams twist and make some hems turn upwards. Don't wash them more often than necessary. It's not necessary to wash a garment every time it's worn, unless there is visible dirt. Washing - a.k.a., twisting, heating, beating, forcing water and soap through the fabric - is damaging to it. There's no way around it. Air them between washings. Don't wash them in water that's too hot for them, and don't use harsh detergent unless it's necessary to remove dirt. Usually, it isn't. To care for knits, wash inside out to avoid surfaces from rubbing against other pieces. That will minimize pilling and pulling of yarn. Don't pull or stretch any article of clothing when it's wet. You'll stress the fibers and some fabrics will stretch out of shape completely. Soak dirty clothes overnight rather than wash them on a longer cycle to get them clean. To get the best of both worlds, dry knits and other stretchy or hard to iron items flat until they're almost dry, then finish them off in the dryer. They'll snap back into shape and not need ironing. For jeans and heavier materials, use the dryer first, for 10 minutes or so, then remove and hang to dry. The material will have more body instead of being limp, but it will dry smooth. You may not like to iron, but ironing gives you the chance to notice loose buttons, loose seam stitches and worn areas that need to be taken care of before they get worse. Set aside clothing that needs mending when you iron and fix them before they're worn again. This will save more work or ruined garments. Care for your clothes according to the type of fabric. Wash, dry, iron and store according to what is best for the type and they will last longer. Use quilting thread to sew on buttons. It's stronger and will last longer. "Lead" pencils are graphite and can be used to make a sticky zipper slide smoothly. Use it also on troublesome snaps. Vinegar will sometimes remove scorch marks. Put a cloth dampened with vinegar over the scorch mark and iron dry on a warm (not hot) setting. If cuffs or other knitted borders have stretched out from wear, but the garment is still clean enough to wear, dampen the area and dry it with a hair dryer. Plain bar soap is a good (and frugal!) pretreatment for almost anything. Wet the area, rub on the soap and scrub with your hands until the stain or grease or dirt disappears. You can leave the soap in the material when you wash it. Grease busters: Shampoo or dish detergent will go after those greasy or oily areas, like "ring around the collar," kitchen splatters and gunky work clothes. Work a little well into the area before washing in the hottest water you can for the fabric. Remove tarry or gummy substances with egg white. Just rub it on and most gummy things will harden up and break into small pieces. If that fails, put the garment into the freezer and when the gummy stuff freezes, you may be able to remove it. There are a lot of other stain removing and laundry tips that I won't go into here, but I want to point out that when you care for your clothes, they'll last longer and you can cut down your clothing budget. It only stands to reason that if your clothes still look good, you don't need to replace them, either new or second hand. |
