China woman loses childhood friend in accident. She asks:
BATTERED and bruised, she sat alone in her room, waiting for a phone call that would say that her friend is well and alive.
Instead Miss Jin Bi Juan, received a call informing her that her friend had just died in hospital.
The 23-year-old Chinese national still blames herself for her friend's death.
Her friend, Ji Jing, 23, had called earlier on Friday night, saying she was drunk and needed Miss Jin to take her home. They shared a rented room in a private apartment in River Valley.
Miss Jin then took a cab to meet Miss Ji at Victoria Street.
'When I arrived, she was standing alone by the roadside. I paid the taxi driver and got out of the car,' recalled Miss Jin.
'I asked her how she was. She pulled my hand and said let's take a cab home.'
'We wanted to get to the opposite side of the road to hail a cab. She was holding my hand and walking in front of me. I don't know what happened after that.'
'When I regained consciousness, I was lying face-down on the road. It was very dark. There were many people surrounding me and one of them sent me to hospital,' Miss Jin added in Mandarin.
Weeping uncontrollably throughout the interview, Miss Jin still blames herself for the accident.
She said: 'Why didn't I hold her hand tighter. I can't believe she's gone.'
Police said they got a call at 9.30pm on Friday, informing them of an accident involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian on Victoria Street, at the junction of Jalan Kubor.
Both were were seriously injured and conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Miss Ji died at 2.30am yesterday.
The rider, a male in his 20s, is still in hospital.
THIRD KILLED
Miss Ji is the third Chinese national to be killed in a road accident here in less than two weeks.
Miss Jin had to break the news to her friend's parents.
'How am I going to face them?' she asked.
It was difficult for her to do it in the early hours of Friday morning.
'I had first called her mum past midnight to say that she was in critical condition in the hospital. Her mother had wanted me to visit her the next day,' said Miss Jin.
'A few minutes after I hung up the phone, I got news that she died in hospital and I had to make a second call to her mum.'
'Her father is on his way here.'
The two childhood friends from Suzhou, China, had arrived here on Monday.
They were supposed to be on holiday here, said Miss Jin.
It was her second time in Singapore.
She was here last year with her parents during her school holidays.
Miss Jin told The New Paper on Sunday that she had graduated from university in Suzhou in June and is planning to start a pet shop business back home.
Hence she had wanted to do some market research on pet food in Singapore.
'That night, Ji Jing was still telling me about a pet shop down the road from where we stay and she had promised to take me there,' said Miss Jin.
'I miss her terribly. She was a happy-go-lucky girl. She seldom talks about her problems. She keeps things to herself. She is a simple girl who wasn't very ambitious.
'She was planning to get married at the end of the year. Her fiance was a teacher.'
Miss Jin said her friend loved Singapore food.
'Her favourite was the steamboat here and she had wanted to take me to eat this weekend,' said Miss Jin.
During the past four days, the two women had gone shopping in Orchard Road and visited the Night Safari.
Miss Jin said her parents were informed of her mishap and had urged her to return home.
She said: 'Of course I want to be home with my family, but I feel that I have the responsibility to wait for Ji Jing's parents to arrive and help with her funeral arrangements.'
Mr Roland Tay, 61, who runs Direct Funeral Services is overseeing the funeral of the deceased for free.
Police are appealing for witnesses to call the traffic police hotline at 1800-547-1818.
