Total SGC$: 676.46 | Re: HOTA - Human Organ Transplant Act Though I didn't opt out... The recent report on HOTA brought up some very relevant talking points...
One of the respondents was concerned that with the HOTA, it becomes very easy and fast for our medical staff to start the process of harvesting organs from dead or dying people. Hence people are afraid that the priority for our doctors has turned from "save as much as possible", to become "save as many as possible"...
As a result, people are afraid that our doctors now won't spend as much time and effort as before in saving an individual, now that he can easily let that one person die, harvest his/her organs through HOTA, and save 6 people (2 kidneys, 2 corneas, 1 heart, 1 liver)... Looks better on his resume as well when he can say "I saved 6 lives through advising transplants"...
Another interesting point is somewhat science fiction, but it's very much possible. I'm sure you do know that our records are all with the government, either via the national registry, through the government hospitals, or through the ministry of Health.
What happens when a son, daughter, relative of a social elite, or even a VVVIP in the country needs a transplant suddenly? Would he or she have to queue up like the rest of us? Or would they de-facto go to the top of this waiting list?
Following this, the government also has access to all our records. What happens if you (and your organs) happen to match this VVVIP? Anything can happen, and they can just "order" your death, harvest your organs, give it to the VVVIP, and you can't say anything about it, cuz it's stipulated in HOTA.
I'm not against HOTA, I just believe more thought needs to be put into it, instead of just treating Singaporeans, perfectly normal humans, as creatures to be harvested upon death.
Possible changes: Letting families of the dead and recipients know where and who their relative's organs went to/came from... Letting people decide where their organs can go to... Stipulate priorities for our medical staff (e.g. only harvest when ALL avenues for treatment have been exhausted)

to fall in love is always easy
to start a relationship is always simple
to build it, is always tough
to maintain it, is 'better said than done'
to break off, is 'easier said than done'
to remain friends after u broke off, is never possible
to forget the memories is 'always doing but never succeeding'
to heal the pain within is hard and tough and never near simple
but one has to try to heal your own heart...
