Question

Marcus is a secondary 3 student, he has learnt in the topic on
solids, liquids & gases that solids have a higher density than
liquids. One day as he was putting a few cubes of ice in a cup
of plain water, he has observed that the ice cubes float
instead of sink. This phenomenon contradicts the fact that solids
are denser than liquids.

Task

Your task is to investigate & account for this phenomenon.
You are to present your findings on an A4-sized plain or
coloured paper. Include diagrams & be as creative as possible.
Minumum font size is 12.

Rubrics

content - 7 marks
Creativity (layout & organisation) - 3 marks

Eh, basically, it's because the ice cubes have a lower density than the water. Why? Because the volume of water is higher than the volume of the ice cubes (e.g. 90% of the content is water, 10% of the content is ice).

If the volumes of the water and the ice are the same, ice will definitely be of a higher density than water. Do I make sense?

There's more water than ice, so water is heavier, that's why ice floats. It's called buoyancy.

E.g. of a simple experiment I can think of...

(A) 300g of water + about 3 ice cubes

(B) 300g of water + 300g of ice

You will see in (B), that ice will actually sink.

hmm i abit dun get it

water have a higher desity then ice
cos ice is solid?
and solid have lesser desity
so the ice float in the liquid which has higher desity?

Water has a higher density than ice because there is aLOT more water than ice.

If ice and water are the same amount, ice will have higher density because it is a solid.

I use 'x' as the density of ice and 'o' as the density of water. See ah.

Same amt. of ice + water
200ml of Ice = x x x x x (5 units)
200ml of Water = o o o (3 units)

5/3 = 1.67 density units

Less ice + more water
40ml of Ice = x (1 unit)
200ml of Water = o o o (3 units)

1/3 = 0.33 density units (it's LESSER than 1.67 units because of lesser ice!)

See the difference?
