I have been to Manila quite a few times but my company usually put me up in either Peninsula Manila or Intercontinental Manila. I prefer the Peninsula as the rooms are huge and the hotel is rather safe as it's further away from the main shopping complexes. While I was there the last time, everyone was vacated from the shopping centres as there was a bomb threat. Lol. However, I still think it's quite safe as you see the private security guys carrying huge sidearms, shotguns and M16s guarding Makati's rich, tourist, visitors and shopping area. :speechless:

I think safety is a main concern for almost everyone travelling nowadays and not money. If you are going for holidays, I suggest you either go in a group or stay away from Manila if necessary unless of course you have a local friend there. Anyway, the food there is rather cheap as compared to here in Singapore by our standards. However, I do find most of their local food either too sweet or too salty for my liking. Lol. Well, there's always McDonalds and Jollibee which is quite alright. There's lots of food establishments in Manila as Filippinos love good food too.

As for interesting places in Manila, I only went to some joints that are not too nice to list here in this forum but other than that, no one brought me sightseeing in Manila leh except to see properties. :cry3: I did however went to another village which was about 2 hours by car but reached there 4 hours later due to traffic jams but the place was rather serene and beautiful. Nevertheless, I hope you will have a great time there as the people are really friendly. I have tried my best to give you an overview of Philippines and I apologise if I have not really answer your question.

Hi arty_29, I don't really know how much one need cos I used credit card most of the time but I usually change about S$200 for a 1 week stay as you are expected to give tips in hotels and restaurants. You also need cash for taxis too. I usually give about 40 to 50 pesos (1 SGD = 31.4171 PHP) for tips to the hotel staffs depending on the level of service.

There's still quite a number of kidnappings in Philippines so try to avoid remote places if possible. Try to call for cabs from your hotel rather than hail one from unknown places if you are meeting your friend. If you need to shop, go to Makati area as it's pretty safe there since it's a protected area. Fyi, fresh water pearls are very cheap in Philippines. If you need more info, you can PM me with your mobile number and I can call you. I can help you to check out cheaper hotels if you really need cos I have quite a bit of friends there.
