WEARY after his night shift , a Hong Kong police officer returned home, eager to get some sleep.
But instead of a much-needed rest, Mr Chau Mau Chun, 31, was faced with a nightmare when he arrived home at 9am on Sunday.
In a bedroom of his 18th floor flat at Yau Mei Court, Mr Chau found his wife hanging motionlessly from a metal bar, reported Hong Kong newspapers.
His son, 3, lay on the bed barely breathing.
His wife, Madam Wong Wai Man, 31, a clerk, had used a belt to hang herself.
She had apparently also tried to suffocate their son, Chau Cheuk Lun, with a pillow before taking her own life.
Mr Chau hurriedly released his wife, but she was already dead.
His son, who lay unconscious on a bed, had red marks on his throat.
The case, which has been classified as suicide and attempted homicide, is currently under investigation.
A note left behind by Madam Wong expressed her frustrations over her relationship with her husband.
Her family members have also told police that Madam Wong suspected that her husband was having a affair.
The couple was said to have fought over this issue.
Madam Wong had told family members: 'If he wants a second wife, he will have to be prepared to collect our bodies.'
However, at that time, her family had thought she was being emotional and did not pay much heed to her.
Madam Wong was a quiet woman who kept to herself most of the time, they said.
They revealed that she had been under medication for a long time, although news reports did not say what she was suffering from.
MAID
Surprisingly, an Indonesian maid who has lived with the family for nearly a month, said she did not notice anything suspicious.
She had arrived back in the flat at 9pm on Saturday after being out.
The next morning, she said she heard the toddler crying in the bedroom, but she didn't investigate further as she knew he was with his mother.
