PUBLIC transport should be nationalised, whereby a central body plans bus routes and tenders them out to private operators.
This central planning of bus routes will help eliminate the profit making concerns that may plague some private transport operators.
These were some of the views that surfaced yesterday as some 60 stakeholders — including transport operators, academics and taxi-drivers — met with the authorities at the first focus group held amid an ongoing review of the public transport system.
Other ideas suggested during the 90-minute discussion included allowing more parking at the fringes of the city to encourage the use of public transport to travel into the city.
A national information system which tracks taxis was mooted to address the lack of taxi drivers during peak hours.
Noting the views, Minister of State for Transport and Finance Lim Hwee Hua – who chaired the discussion last night – said that the authorities are constantly reviewing the public transport industry structure and regulations.
Another two focus group discussions are scheduled over the next two months.
