there are few problems that might link to this, firstly your hard-disk having some problems, secondly your pc having some problems, and thirdly your pc configurations might be having some problems.
i have this problem before also, my hard-disk can store documents, can remove, but cannot be seen in the pc...so i ended up having to reformat my pc using recovery disk

i last time got encounter this problem b4. i safely remove the hard drive. and once i re-insert again, cannot b seen again, so most of the time i juz remove without the safely. i think for hard drive is okie but thumb drive not safe. i been doin tt so long lo. if u got important stuffs, safely first.
