Guide To Selecting Accessories
I have received emails asking what are the best shape of earrings for round or long faces, as well as the colours that suit different skin tones. So keep them in mind as you choose your favourite piece!
Face Shapes. First, knowing that the size of your earring is important not only to the impression you want to make, but also to your face shape. Generally, large earrings “decrease” your overall size, while small earrings make you look, well, larger. Most importantly, select earrings that are the opposite shape of your face. For example, if you have a round face, do not chose big round hoops. It's a similar theory to choosing spectacles.
HEART faces people are usually hot mamas because they tend to look like living dolls! To bring out your heart-shaped faces, wear earrings with a thin base. But if you want to play down your face shape (as some people find it “overly-hearted”), wear earrings with an extensive base. All lengths/types of necklaces also suit you.
OVAL faces are a lucky bunch of people! They are blessed with a face shape that suits every shape of earrings and necklaces.
ROUND faces should select long, thin, and dangling earrings to balance out their face shape. Similarly, wearing a V-shaped necklace to a V-shaped neckline would be most ideal. Personally, I feel that tubes or strapless dresses look best with long dangly earrings.
OBLONG/SQUARE faces are very suitable for large, round hoop earrings. They too can opt for long dangling earrings, but earrings with overly sharp/angular lines do not complement them. In essence, long earrings with slight chuckiness are their best friends.
LONG faces should not wear long, dangling earrings. Short to mid-length earrings and a short round necklace will complement their face shape. Also, chunkiness in their earrings/necklace will also balance out their “length”.
Just an added tip for women with narrow foreheads; larger/longer earrings tend to add presence to the bottom half your face to balance out your forehead. As a rule of thumb, I strongly feel that if your earrings are dramatic enough to make a statement, NEVER over-accessorize with a necklace.
SKIN TONES. As Asians, we are a family of cool tones and warm tones. Chinese people, like me, generally have warm toned skins – yellowish and fair pigments. We look best when gold and light bronze are the dominant colors of the chains/accessories. Malays, Indians and people who often go for deep tans have cool tones – darker pigments. They would look best in dominant colors of silver, black, and dark bronze (esp. chain colors). However, do not be afraid to venture into a tinge of gold because that’s what usually sophisticates the whole piece.
Picking the right kind of jewellery for yourself and feeling comfortable in it is important because accessorizing yourself well can make last season’s clothes still look contemporary! At least it saves me the money from stocking up my wardrobe every time a fad emerges. =p |
