IMAGINE swallowing an 18cm-long toothbrush. A 42-year-old did just that and had to be rushed to hospital yesterday..
The woman, known only as
Madam Lau, had a habit of using her toothbrush to induce vomiting after brushing her teeth every morning, reported the Oriental Daily News.
She is believed to be suffering from bulimia - an eating disorder characterised by binge eating and self-induced vomiting.
At 10am yesterday, Madam Lau was going through her daily routine when the accident happened.
She reportedly pushed the toothbrush deep down her throat and accidentally dropped it.
She swallowed the entire toothbrush but did not choke.
She panicked. Her teenage daughter, who was home as well, called the police and ambulance. Madam Lau was rushed to the nearest hospital.
There, medical staff members were sceptical when told what had happened.
It was only after they sent her for an X-ray that they realised she was telling the truth.
Doctors said the toothbrush, which was lodged in her stomach, was too long for her to pass it out.
So she was put under general anaesthesia, while doctors gingerly pulled out the toothbrush through her mouth using long surgical clamps.
This wasn't the first time such an incident has happened in Hong Kong.
The Oriental Daily News reported that in May 1999, a 16-year-old girl who was brushing her teeth before bedtime, accidentally swallowed the 5cm-long brush head when her toothbrush broke.
She was then rushed to hospital and the brush head was extracted.
