Default FIFA referee Shamsul Maidin announces retirement

FIFA referee Shamsul Maidin has announced that he will be retiring from refereeing to concentrate on his role as Head of the Referees Department at the Football Association of Singapore.

Shamsul, 41, has been a FIFA referee for 12 years and in that time, he has officiated at two World Youth U-20 Championships, three Asian Cup Finals, one African Cup of Nations, one Confederations Cup and last year’s FIFA World Cup Finals in Germany.

He was awarded the accolade of AFC Match Official of the Year in both 2005 and 2006. He also claimed the S.League Referee of the Year award on four occasions – 1997 to 1999 and 2001.

Says Shamsul, “I may be retiring from refereeing but I’m going to concentrate full time on training, coaching and developing the next batch of top referees in Singapore.

“I will like to take this opportunity to thank FAS, in particular Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee as well as the Referees’ Committee for their support all these years.”

Shamsul will be attending the AFC Elite Instructor and Assessor Course in January next year while last month, he was in London to attend the English FA International Instructors Course.

Says FAS General Secretary Steven Yeo, “Shamsul was arguably one of the best referees Singapore has ever produced and I’m sure he’s looking forward to the next phase of his refereeing career which is to spearhead the programmes the Referees’ Department have lined up. He will certainly be a very good mentor for the next generation of referees.”
