Default My family is considering of giving up my border collie

Haiz..
We bought this border collie from tampines and my dad actually had love at one sight at it. We were going to move house at that point of time when we had the dog. We had a husky already.
Somehow they though that the border collie is
1. naughty and cannot be trainned.
2. bad habit of bitting things.
3. My new home had this very strange neightbour who had this habit and pick problems with other peoples pet and complian to AVA. There was a case whereby my neighbour's german shepet got fine $500. My dogs they cannot stick to their owners like other dogs. They had a tenency of running away some times.

I am not the kind of person that you buy the dog, just because you cannot take care of it, and give it away. I am posting this thread hoping that there was ways where by people can give piece of advice.

all dogs can be trained...before u get a border collie...did u read up on them? abt their behaviour and character? border collie have very high energy and are very active...they need to have ample exercise to burn away their energy...your ans as below :

1) like wat i say...all dogs can be trained....its juz a matter of time and efforts dat u put in. be firm in ur training too.

2) chewing normally are due to teething stage, boredom, attention seeking...is ur dog at his teething stage? give him more toys or raw hides to chew...if its due to boredom...did u exercise him enough to tired him out? border collie can be very destructive when they have alot of energy but nowhere to burn. sometimes dog chew to attract attention from their owners...have u neglect him? did u give him time to play and bond with u?

3) if properly trained...,meaning control his barking etc will helps u alot...we cannot deny a fact that they are alot of non dogs lover in singapore...if u allow ur dog to be a nuisance to ur neighbour....then u r actually inviting ur neighbours to lodge a complain to u...regarding abt the escaping of ur dogs...its always impt to train ur dog on the recall command...for the safety and also consideration for others...bonding is also very impt...if all along u buy a dog for the sake of buying but not training them...then i would suggest its best u dont keep any dogs...sorry for being harsh but its a fact.

bonding with ur dog is very very impt i stress once again...if u get a dog,be responsible and give ur dog the training and love require...if u dont give him any...then u cant complain he destroy this destroy dat...remember...there is no bad dogs...only bad owners. if u really cant handle...may i suggest u send ur dogs to training school. dont give them up w/out even trying.

Spend more times on ur Border Collie...Bring the dog for long walk, Jogging to tired the dog out. A tired dog is a good dog.

For running away, If u have strong bond with ur dogs they dun that BUT for husky. They are escape artist and their hobby is to ran away.

Have you tried hiring a trainer instead of training yourself? My dog was also a hopeless case type and in the end, i hired a trainer. Made a huge difference. Now my dog is much much better

Yes, I have to agree that husky are escape artist, and when my husky starts to run, my border collie starts to run away too..~ Actually, i am not very sure if my border collie is teething or not. But it is really attention seeking and also very playful.
We once send it for training but somehow when the border collie see the other dogs around for training, it goes crazy after them.
Maybe it really takes time to train with them

hehe.. your border collie is hyperactive! Think you should continue with the training by professional trainers, i'm sure they've met alot of mischevious dogs.

gotta be firm with your training and dont give up, it take some time for them to learn and do not cast away what they have learn after lesson. gotta pratice with them to let them know who is the alpha in the family pack.

missy_dixie: how much did you pay for your training for your dog? And also i find it very difficult to toilet train my dog as well, because it always straight after its meal. Within 5 mins after the meal, it starts to poo..
Today i bought it for a short job, i guess more or less it did manage to tone her down abit.

I felt so upset over it yet my SO says that think it in another way, at least u never need to clear its shit anymore, its not logical to feel this kindda odf stuff. Sometime i think that no pt in telling him this kindda of stuff.

Understand your plight though. I was somewhat in your same situation years ago when i got my dog.. my parents were against it, they keep wanting me to give up the dog. Because of this issue, we had cold wars.... and this created a 'hatred' towards my parents. Of course i insist on keeping my dog as he is innocent, it was hard for the first few weeks but i kept my promise (to my dog) that i will protect him. Of course i have to do my part in cleaning after my dog and not create any nuisance or inconvenience for my family, keep the hse clean so that they do not have any complains.

As time goes by, they somehow accepted my dog.... But not long after, i got another dog (actually it's to accompany the first dog). It was a blessing that i was getting married and moving out to our new home. But problem did not end there.... After moving in for abt a couple of mths, HDB came knocking on my door and asked me to remove my dogs (they are not HDB approved)... a neighbor had made a complain. They complaint of the barking (they bark becos they were unfamiliar with the new home). I was so scare that they will take my dogs away, i locked my dogs with me in the room for the past few days, so that HDB wil not hear them when they comes. I also placed them in the hotel for a few days..... oh yes, we also went to a few of the neighbors hse to apologise of the nuisance that have created. After few weeks, we didnt hear from HDB again and hope neighbors will be more accommodating.

In the meantime, we try to be a good dog-owner by making sure our place is free from urine odor, dogs dont bark.... just do not let neighbors have anything to complain. It has been 3 yrs, but im still quite scare that the HDB guy will come back again....

Sorry for being so long-winded. Just wanna say that when there is a will, there is a way. In order to be accepted, you will have to do a part in making it happen. All the best!

Oh yes, are your dogs sterilized?? Both my male dogs have marking problem, they will mark the whole hse (legs of sofa & dining table, wall....) when we are not at hm. One of them will bit and tear the edge of sofa, destroy the things that he can get hold of
