Toilet Roll Exploding phone kills Korean man

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- The South Korean man who was believed killed in an accident involving a cell phone may not have died of an exploding phone battery, a news report said Thursday.

The quarry worker was found dead Wednesday with a melted phone battery stuck in his shirt pocket. His heart and lungs were damaged, and his spine and some ribs were broken, police had said.

The National Institute of Scientific Investigation said the body had a burn but the scope of damage to internal organs was too extensive to have been caused by a cell phone explosion, Yonhap news agency reported, citing an unnamed official who performed an autopsy.

"It is difficult to conclude that the damage of internal organs was caused by the cell phone battery explosion," Yonhap quoted the official as saying.

Exploding phone kills Korean man

Ribs fractured, heart & lungs damaged

December 01, 2007

In what is believed to be the first case of its kind in Korea, a man was killed by his handphone, which exploded.

The man, identified as Mr Seo, 33, was killed on Wednesday, reported Chosun Ilbo.

Around 7.30am on Wednesday, a worker at a quarry in Cheongwon County, North Chungcheong Province, found Mr Seo lying beside his backhoe - a piece of excavating equipment.

The worker told police he found Mr Seo bleeding from the nose and his phone was on fire. The worker put out the fire and called emergency services.

Mr Seo was taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

A doctor in the emergency room of Chungbuk National University Hospital said: 'Seo had a blot-shaped wound caused by a shock or impact below his left chest.

'The X-ray showed that his heart and lungs were damaged.

'It seems he died due to severe impact from a blast, considering that his ribs were fractured.'

The doctor said the victim had a black handphone with a severely melted battery in his left shirt pocket.

He said: 'The accident was highly likely caused by an explosion, given the damaged conditions of his shirt.

'The area near the wound indicated it was burned by a blast.'

Cheongju police are assuming that Mr Seo was killed by the phone, given that he was a healthy man.

They asked the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to perform an autopsy and examine his handphone.

The manufacturer of the lithium-ion polymer battery was also not identified. The phone company said a Japanese and a Korean firm are its two main battery suppliers.

An official of the electronics company said: 'We will fully cooperate with the police investigation.

'But we believe that the battery was very unlikely to explode. Our battery is wrapped in aluminum foil, so when there is an external shock, it should just melt, not explode.'

The last reported case of handphone-related death was in China: In June, the press reported that a 22-year-old welder was killed at a steel mill in Lanchow in China's Gansu Province after the handphone in his chest pocket exploded.

I think It's fake. The man was killed by his colleague, if the below article is related.
